further, tariffs make no sense when you don't have a corresponding domestic manufacturing industry to support. that's why blanket tariffs make no sense. when was the last time we made all of our own stuff, or had a domestic steel industry to support?
if you want to reshore American manufacturing, you need to meet the potential factory owners where they're at. "what do you need to make this happen?" that's the only question that matters.
tariffs are way too blunt an instrument. they will just drive up inflation for no good reason.

What is the issue with import duties ? It is common depending on the product. Courier companies are required to do this.

Stores always use the phrase "LOWER PRICES".
It is meaningless. It doesn't reference if prices were lower or higher before.
The phrase you cannot use is "always the lowest price". Stores got called on for using that.

Trump scrapped the 'de minimus' clause which allowed no tariffs on imports of $800 or under.

Temu and Shein shoppers will now have to pay those tariffs on Chinese imports.

Soon it’ll be even more cost effective to take a Trip to Mexico or Europe and make big purchases.

My wife and I figured out long ago that our annual or bi-annual European vacation was also the best way to do big item shopping.

She'll usually grab a couple $5000 - $6,000 bags and nice Cartier bracelet. I've bought my Rolexes there as well. The savings on those items versus their cost in the US generally pays for our trips. Well at least the non-1st class airfare portion (which is usually covered by the Delta or American Air miles).

A 10-15% tariff added to those goods would increase their prices another $1000 each. Hence making the trip to Europe even more attractive for shopping for high end luxury items.

As for pricing of everyday items for the general public, gas, groceries etc are not getting more affordable. In fact, people can expect to see fuel costs increase. I'm personally good for it, I get a few oil and gas checks monthly which are starting to increase. Who knew some vacant land in N. Louisiana would keep paying me for life. Nothing like free money (thanks white dude - great great grandpa - giving your black kids some land over 100 years ago).

I’ve rarely declared anything of value. I think once I paid an fee of $70. We’ve generally shipped the goods back to the US for about $100 insured. The 12.5 VAT return usually comes in by the time we get settled back in the states. I’ve been fortunate enough that the euro/dollar conversion remains the same during and after the trip.
