Backup lights on all the time

I was negotiating my way out of a parking lot tonight behind some giant bubbamobile dually pimped out pickup truck. He was sitting at a stop sign at an intersection in the parking lot. I pulled up behind him, waiting on him, and noticed he had his white backup lights on the the back of the cab on.

Oh, gee, I thought, this moron is about to backup over me because he can't see me, or he just doesn't know he's in reverse and is going to gun it and run over me.

Then he took off going forward, and his backup lights stayed on.

Then I stopped at Lowes on the way home, and there was another pickup that was empty and parked, and the backup lights were on for it as well. I have been seeing pickups like this more and more lately.

Is this some sort of aggressive move to make people keep back because they think you're going to back over them?

Something bubba thinks is cool?

A common inbred redneck wiring mistake?

Bad design that uses the backup light as a truck bed light, and it's easy to leave on accidentally?

Some kind of design defect like all the GM vehicles you see with one front clearance light burned out?

hmmm I never noticed this, I will look for it. It would make me nervous as I drive a tiny car and those giant trucks could smush me.

I think they modify the lights because they think its cool.

I drive a pickup. The reverse lights are with the tail lights or on some with custom lights they might be in the bumper. The lights on the back of the cab are load lights. They are intended to give light so you can see what you are loading, unloading or check that your load is secure. There is a switch on the dash that you turn on and off. If you do not check the switch to make sure they are off, you may not realize they are on due to the light outside and it being dark inside the cab.
