Default Lea Madisson's Guide to Food and Fare - St Louis edition

I am planning to head to St Louis in October sometime but as I always do... I got to ask about the best places to stay, the best places to eat (local food places are the best), etc...

Ideas???

Smooch!

The hill area in the southwestern part of the city is a great place if you like Italian fare, try toasted Ravioli's if you have never had one. A couple of other local delights are BBQ'd pork steaks and gooey butter cake. Of course nothing I have mentioned here is healthy, but great tasting foods tend to go that route.

Have a great safe trip, Aces

To my STL peeps: if y'all don't fill this lady's dance card to overflowing while she's in town, y'all are damn fools. Y'all ain't gonna get a better ride this side of Dallas Rain.

Speaking of whom, it's a pity Dallas isn't visiting at the same time. I've heard tell being double-teamed by Dallas-Lea could very possibly be fatal.

But what a way to go. The mortician will take two weeks to wipe the smile off your corpse.

Cheers,

bcg

There you have it...

Somebody better notify the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to reserve space in the next week's issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report for the report on the sudden increase in deaths and hospitalizations in St. Louis for myocardial infarctions and sudden cardiac arrest...

Cheers,

bcg (I envy the lucky bastards who do doubles with these two, I really do... )

Is Charlotte's Rib still in business? When I was still living up there they were on Manchester Road in Ballwin (IIRC), and had a "humongous pork steak" on the menu that was pretty damn good. Large enough to serve as your ration of dead pig flesh for a month or 6 weeks, but soooooo damn good.

And you must try gooey butter cake while you're there. You'll never find anything else like it outside of St. Louis.

Cheers,

bcg

Good suggestions, Aces.
Generally it is best to avoid Maryland Heights and Westport areas due to LE concerns. Will you have a car? If you want to really see St. Louis, then you could stay downtown, but parking can be an issue for you and your clients. But there is a lot to see and do downtown. Washington ave has a lot of cool places to eat, but can be a bit dicey at night.
Clayton is a nice area. It is a suburb, but is kind of a mini city with a lot of hotels and restaurants. It is very safe there.
If you have a car, Chesterfield is a nice area. A little farther out from downtown, but nice hotels and nice shopping, including some brand new outlet malls.

Charlette's rib is still around as their website that mentions a huge handcut pork steak. Reasonable prices and in a nice part of western STL county.

BCG my have saved this gooey butter recipe but here it is for the rest of you.

1 box yellow cake mix
1 stick of butter melted
1 egg
mix with a fork and pat into a 9X13 inch pan

1 8 oz pkg. cream cheese softened
2 eggs
1 pound box of powdered sugar (3 3/4 cups)

mix second group with mixer then spread over first mixture when smooth.
Bake 40 minutes at 350 degrees
If desired save and sprinkle some of the sugar on when cooling

This is thought to have been a mistake made by a baker when cooking or mixing a deep butter cake? I'm not sure but it is a very rich dessert and small portions are suggested. I have sometimes substituted a chocolate cake mix and added Hershey's chocolate to either batch for a different spin. The gooey part will turn out different on almost every batch, from runny/gooey to pretty solid.

Like Bluffcityguy, I gotta tell you St. Louis guys that you shouldn't miss Lea! Lea with another woman is fantastic. And the thought of her with Dallas is just f'ing mind boggling!!!

I lived in St. Louis about 30 years ago. Back then the Central West End (just east of Forest Park) was the place to go for restaurants. But I would imagine that that has changed after all this time.

Several have mentioned the Clayton area and I would think it would be a good choice for a traveler. Central location to the city and suburbs, upscale area and close to good food and shopping. If you have a car then no where in the STL area is very far if you want to get out and see the city.

OMG... the reunion of Dallas the "Biker Chick" and Lea the "Southern Belle"... At least that is what we would call our doubles years ago when Dallas was in the Jackson area more often!!

Girl... we have to offer some doubles!!! These guys won't know what hit them!!!

Oh, yeah... and thanks everyone for some great suggestions!

More later!

Smooch!

Wowza! You boys are in for a real treat. Both fantastic ladies.

I am not a huge fan of Gooey Butter Cakes (they are super rich) but you should try them at least once. http://gooeylouiecake.com/

For BBQ check out Pappy's or Bogart's. Both are fairly busy so sometimes take-out is your best bet. Anything on the Hill is great for Italian food. Must try toasted ravioli. Yummy!

The Hill also has great Mexican - Pueblo Solis and Amigo Joe's.

Downtown, Clayton, Central West End are all great places to stay since they are close to many of that attractions here.

Urban Spoon can help with dining options in your area. Http://www.urbanspoon.com

and http://explorestlouis.com/ if you want to see what fun things are available during your visit.

Have fun! Pm me if you need anything.
