They are calling on Mendez to give up his chairmanship; not his senate seat....because of Menendez's "problems" they want Reid to replace the Chairman with a more liberal democrat.
The NYTs editorial position has nothing to do with a "good government standard", and everything to do with raw political power of the Foreign Affairs Committee Chairmanship.
If the NYTs was concerned with "good government" they would call for Menendez to step down, and let Christi appoint a replacement.....
But they won't, it would change the power structure in the Senate. The NYTs bias is evident - they could care less about good government if it means throwing a Democrat out.
