If you are not able to upload the avatar from phone (smart phone or not) try using a real computer to do the upload. The avatar is part of your account once it has been uploaded.

You can also link the image by entering the URL to the Image from another website. Do that from your User CP link

Imgur.com Works perfect! Download app from App Store, upload pic and copy URL option is right there. Very simple. Even gives options for pic size. Square Thimbnail worked for avatar.
