Default Thomas Jefferson SUPPORTED Public Funding of Education!

Yes, this was a shock to me, too. But look at how he would have done it. He said that in order for the federal government to fund public universities, there would have to be a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT allowing the practice. He was well aware that the Constitution did NOT enable the federal government to use tax money to fund an educational system, absent such an amendment.

That is the RIGHT way to enact change in major public policy.

And then look at why Jefferson wanted America to fund education. He didn't want America to become like Europe, which he accurately describes in the article.

Where are we now? We are funding education without a Constitutional amendment, and are becoming more like Europe.

We apologize, President Jefferson.

Many universities are supported by the state and not the federal government. In states like Mississippi this is supported by a constitutional amendment. It was the GOP who wanted public funding of state facilities for the education of both white and black students. It was the racist democrats who took over the state government after a contested (see fraudulent) election. Eventually the need for school for black children was overlooked until the 1960s.

If they would teach like they use to instead of teaching how to pass tests so the district is in compliance we would not have slipped into the position we are now.

I still do not understand why we are in the business of loaning money to students. Not the job of the federal government. Where are we getting the money to loan in the first place. oh yeah we are borrowing it.

Very soon we won't be able to borrow it. The next stage is we print the money and pay our debts with a worthless dollar. As the likelyhood of this increases China and the other's buying our debt will demand much higher interest rates. We're currently rolling over the national debt at approximately three percent interest because we're still viewed as a fairly safe investment. If the interest rate goes up significantly, as it inevitably will, the deficit will skyrocket which will drive the interest rates even higher. That's the death spiral we're headed towards.

Is the Student Loan collapse the next big fiasco? How mant billions are out there that could be defaulted on?

And, what are the Universities role in this, selling expensive educations that seem to be failing in preparing young people to enter a ever more demanding work force.

Is a College degree really worth what the Students pay?

The given number is now 1 trillion dollars and members of the democratic party along with, suspiciously, the OWS movement are proposing student loan forgiveness. That means 1 trillion dollars just disappears from our economy with the expected results. Talk about a ballon and it is engineered. Over the last three years the government has been taking up as much debt as it can get its hands on. Everyone, except a punk president, knows the problem with concentrating so much debt in one area. Of course if all the lending institutions got out of the business then only the government would be making the loans. That could mean that the government would control who got a loan, for how much, and for what degree. The government could also demand service to repay the loan like working at the community center or providing information on your friends.
