Mods: Should they hobby in the area the moderate?
Greetings ECCIE peeps,
I have been wondering about the immense level of trust that has been bestowed on the various moderators. They are in a thankless role of guardian of a variety of people that come and go through the ECCIE community. Too many times they are forced into the task of settling disputes like a highly skilled judge. So, since so many of their duties are judge like, should they be held to the same level of scrutiny regarding their impartiality? Should modeators be allowed to hobby in the area they are responsible for moderating?
I'm curious about the opinions of others regarding this topic.

Yes I agree with SNL the mods only moderate the website what they do when they log off is none of our business really. As long as the moderate by book I don't care who or where they fuck, as long as they are fair on ECCIE.

Yeah, that I think is first and foremost...(for me anyway)...... Moderating in your own area typically is easier (I would think) because of familiarity of the area, most of the posters, and the eb and flow of the forums there.....
Now as far as Mods writing reviews, I can absolutely understand the aprehension as to having questions about said reviews...... I rarely write reviews as it goes, and will only write them upon request or if they offer a fresh or unknown view of a provider..... but I ALWAYS tell them upfront that I am going to be completely honest in what I say good or bad...... as we all know there are ways to spread the word that goes beyond simply writing reviews........ but it has been discussed before about "no reviews by Mods" and I can see very good points for both sides....

I don't think it should make any difference to where Mods Hobby. I don't think they should be permitted to post on any threads unless it is to give some sort of directive or to inform members the thread is closed, ect.

Whether or not one might find this astonishing, from the mods I have talked to I get a great feeling of fairness. I don't think it matters. If you are one of those people who believe they are biased, then you don't have to take their opinions into consideration. As long as they don't start dispensing points unfairly (for offenses that were not committed), then who cares? They should be allowed to put in their .02 where they see fit as long as they follow the rules like everyone else. Also, I agree with JAD, if they are from the area where they moderate, they have a good feeling for the members there and can interpret more easily what is going on when it's goin down.

Yeah, I think that's the implication here.
Some people handle power better than others. It could be said that if a lady doesn't give a mod what he wants, there is a thrill in being able to help or damage said lady's career. Therefore assigning mods to a different area on the board from which they live lowers that possibility only slightly, but is a valid point.
No need for that in my opinion. We have fantastic mods on ECCIE.

So if mods hobby in their area, how can the ECCIE community feel confident that they are acting impartial when tasked with dealing with a complaint involving a provider they are seeing?

How can you be sure that a mod acts impartial when tasked with dealing with a complaint involving a fellow hobbiest they may know or like?
Moderators are asked to hand those tasks over to one that isn't involved with either or at least involve others in the decision making process to insure that the decision is the right one. That doesn't always happen but it's done more than you may realize.
I think there are pros and cons to having local mods as well as the other way around. Whichever way it is some won't be happy. I like having moderators that are local much more than I would if they weren't.
