President Biden once again threatened the country with more prolonged lockdowns if the public doesn't do what he says. But there is no going back to the lockdowns we’ve seen for the last year, no matter what Biden wants.
Biden threatened the public with more lockdowns on Thursday,
saying, “If we don't stay vigilant and the conditions change, then we may have to reinstate restrictions to get back on track. Please, we don't want to do that again.” It's a long way from his campaign
promise that he would "shut down the virus, not the country."
Biden can’t impose new lockdowns himself, but Democratic governors have been quick to defer to strict interpretations of whatever the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends. Biden has already
shown that the CDC will fall in line behind whatever his agenda demands, as it did with its flip-flop on reopening schools.
In the same speech, Biden
announced his extremely ambitious (not really) return to normal: small family gatherings on the Fourth of July. Biden has only set goals so far that the United States is already on track to reach, as he did with his goal of 100 million
vaccinations in 100 days. But adding the threat of renewed lockdowns shows he still doesn’t understand just how far past lockdowns we really are.
The pandemic is fading. New daily cases are at their lowest level since last October. Deaths have continued to decline. Each vaccination pushes us closer to our pre-pandemic normal. According to the CDC, 13% of the adult population of the U.S. are fully vaccinated, including 32% of people age 65 and over.
The evidence indicates that vaccines stop the transmission of the virus. Even if they didn’t, a full year of lockdowns was plenty, especially when too many politicians neglected the mental health effects of lockdowns, unemployment, and social isolation. But they do, and that means there is no going back to lockdowns. We should only be moving forward toward more reopenings, larger capacities in businesses, and fewer government restrictions.
How Biden thinks people should be gathering or celebrating holidays is irrelevant. The threat of more lockdowns isn’t going to change the fact that people have been gathering for anything from the winter holidays to crowded sporting events to having barbecues just to have company. Biden’s caution would be welcome last April, but it’s outdated now. We are moving away from lockdowns every day, whether he likes it or not.
