Back in the early to mid 1970s I had a hard time applying to Grad schools. Even with good grades. Affirmative action meant that applicants less qualified than I were being put ahead of me. One admissions councilor remarked that being a white male from a family of professionals automatically put me far down the list.

At one p[point, I took a civil service test that would allow me to apply for jobs with the State. After taking the test with hundreds of others, I found out that only applicants with a score over 104% could expect a call-back. So even if I'd scored 100%, i didn't have a hope in hell because I didn't have any bonus points for being a minority or a woman. Even much later in life (1990s) I faced sexist discrimination when applying for a position as an x-ray technologist.

So yeah. . .there is an aspect of white gradience in my background. I am not unique in this.
