What a great player he was.

Don’t know how this is political, but Sayers was a joy to watch.

Can’t wait for the bowlers to start shitting on pro sports now.

RIP.

This is sad on the one hand, but on the other, what to regret if we cannot change this fact? It may be that someone new will be better. Although the best is the enemy of the good.

his knee injury would be severe even by today's standards. he tore two ligaments at the same time and back then they hadn't yet started using replacement ligaments from cadavers. they would use other ligaments to compensate but when you tear two it limited what they could do.

no guarantees but he would have stood a much better chance in more modern times of recovering and continuing his career.

1968–1969: Right knee injury and comeback season

Sayers had the most productive rushing yardage game of his career on November 3, 1968, against the Green Bay Packers, during which he carried 24 times for 205 yards.[39] His season ended prematurely the following week against the 49ers when he tore several ligaments in his right knee including his anterior cruciate ligament, his medial collateral ligament, and his meniscus cartilage.

his second knee (left) injury was likely due in part to overcompensating for the prior injury. that's a matter of confidence as even today players take awhile to trust the knee even after it's physically 100 percent.

a great player who's career was cut short too soon.

Gales Sayers deserves praise as a FB player and a human. But the truth is he had one great year as a player. Granted, it was a hellava year. But his numbers wouldn't get a "modern" rb entrance into the HOF today.

Oh, that's some tough news to take. The Chicago Bears was my favorite team growing up. This a great clip of some of Gale's best runs.

yeah. you can't put someone in the HOF with an asterisk by his name claiming "Might have been the best ever if his knee didn't give out". that's unfair to the players who didn't blow out a knee.

Even when you clowns are trying to be somewhat normal people instead of Trump tards you are still fucked in the head.

He had incredible moves and made incredible jaw dropping runs that had never been seen before. Or since.

If you are too young to have actually seen him perform live, then search his highlights and see what you have been missing all these years.

Is he the best running back ever? No. Was his career tragically cut short? Yes.

Does he belong in the Hall of Fame at Canton?

Absolutely

he belongs in the COLLEGE hall of fame.

he DOES NOT belong in the NFL hall of fame.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/history/leaders/_/stat/rushlead

not even in the top 25.
