Things are sent out in plain text and no encryption.

It is a thrown together site and has too many things in cookie cache that I would want out there.

Yea, the web design was meant to be simpler, I did not think that people came to the site to evaluate its stellar design attributes. Have you seen BP or CL? I am not sure that their design was/is the motivator for people to post there.

Maybe when we grow up we can hire a designer to revamp it. At least we dont have a bunch of ads like this site and many others. We rely on post upgrades, like the gallery and the premiere ads.

Every site has to deal with spam. We have many blocks in place, but in the end if they try hard enough, spam is going to happen. Go ahead and try posting on EC. We have the dreaded captchas. No accounts, everything is verified via email on every post. Emails are not presented within the interface. There are spam blocks in place not only for reply spam but also for the posts themselves. We can block reply spam so that if you dont want to keep getting emails from the jerks and spammers, just block their replies.

Regarding the cookie cache, the only items that we put in there are your current location and your current visibility as well as a session cookie that almost every web server creates. There are a couple more from our analytics and app performance tools. But I would consider that very small compared to most applications. But overall, only two for each domain. Same as BP and a little less that CL.

Why do you need encryption for your classifieds? No personal information is out there unless you put it in your post.

If there was a template available to create a site like this, I wish that you would have pointed me to it months ago as it would have saved me a *lot* of time.

I havent been called a "noob" in a very long time. But I like it. Its like getting carded at the bar. Once in a while it is nice for someone to think you as being too young.

EC - just checked out you site with my iPad and it looked fine - a little annoying seeing the sample posts but I'm sure as you get users they will be removed. I agree with you on the encryption and a classified site, unencripted data flow from http sites like this one and the millions of others on the web is the norm. Some people can be lulled I to a false sense of security by being told the data is encrypted but the truth is if you are connecting over a un-encrypted connection to a website (non https) the data is un-encrypted even if you are typing into an encrypted "form". I would recommend that you encrypt your cookie files, this is just good website design practices

One thing that annoys me about our site within the ipad/safari browser is the right margin is a little off when viewing a post with images and the full image popups dont may much attention to the floating header so they tend to hide behind it a little. But other than that it looks alright. Those issues are on the todo list. We are contemplating an ipad App, I am just not sure of the demand just yet.

Regarding the samples... yea I agree with you. They are mostly there to showcase what an ad looks like. One of the cool things about our posting model is that you can limit who can see your posts based on their visibility (cuts down on spam but still allows massive visibility). The problem with that model is that you can have zip codes in the middle of nowhere that dont get a lot of posts and may not fall into the visibilities of other posts, so the site can look more empty than it actually is. So for those scenarios, the samples do a good job of highlighting the post views. The good news is that they are set on a sliding scale of 10 samples in each category/visibility... so as posts grow inside of a specific category/visibility, the samples will trail off... you can see that by looking at categories that have posts and those that may not, there will always be at least 10 posts, including the samples. So the little thing that annoys you will slowly trail off into oblivion.

As far as the encrypted cookies. yea. I can see your point. They are just the visibility and the current zip, so we did not think that the security of them justified even the tiny amount of milliseconds it takes to encrypt them. But its such a small change, so we'll go ahead and make that change.... just for your IP though.
