This was political grandstanding, it had nothing to do with persuading Senators. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, two people who Schiff had his best chance with, were incensed. If anything this makes them less likely to vote for witnesses or removal from office. Based on their comments and comments of other Republican senators, I don't think there was ever a warning from the White House, as alleged by Schiff.

That's not to say that he didn't have a point. Trump needs to watch his mouth and quit saying things that hurt the Republican Party, the United States of America and, most of all, himself. He needs to quit with the petty, vindictive attitude. A good example is Jeff Flake. If he'd kept his mouth shut, or better yet taken Flake's criticisms seriously and done something about them, he'd probably have one more Republican in the Senate. It looks like a state with two Republican Senators a couple of years ago (Flake and McCain) will go entirely to the Democrats come 2021. Pledging blind allegiance to Donald Trump is a requisite now for winning in the primaries, but in certain states it's a handicap in the general election. We could see a Democratic House and Senate after the next election. Combine that with a Sanders or Warren presidency and we've got a huge problem.
