Old Mexico
Had a blast in Texas, and will be coming back in a few weeks. Heard a lot of romantic stories about Texas and Old Mexico. Some people think it is safe to go down into Mexico, some people say very dangerous. What is the consensus?

Very dangerous. There is nothing over there worth your life. I would be extremely sad if any harm came to that cute little body of yours. Check the newspapers for stories of people going missing...McAllen, Reynosa, Rio Grande City, Matamoros, Laredo, Jimenez, Piedras Negras...all having the same problems...the drug runners are fighting for territory...and anyone who looks at anyone in the gangs is eliminated so that they do not report anything they may have seen.

Oh, back in the day. Was lots of fun, college buds walk across for the night, and never felt unsafe. I would not even consider it now...very sad because it shouldn't be that way. Any one but me remember having a college bud that was searching all evening for a donkey show? One night, we piled 8 of us in a taxi in Tijuana and cab circled around for 10 minutes, charged us 3 bucks for 8 people and brought us back within a block of the same place pointed to a club called Unicornia and said "There....donkey show!" Didn't exist. Now providers express concern about even visiting EP, which I get. Sad, so sad.

I ventured across to many border towns in the 90's for good, cheap, fun entertainment. Damn, I miss those days. I wouldn't even consider it today. The risks far outweigh the rewards today. I'd even be hesitant to visit resort areas such as Acapulco, Cabo, Cancun, etc.
The U.S. State Department has issued travel warnings for Mexico:

I have been in El Paso for many years - it used to be great - no way I would go into Mexico now. Car jackings, muggings, kidnapping for ransom are still reported here regularly. No way.

I also had a few trips to Juarez to visit the clubs, the ladies, and even made a Donkey show. It was a lot of fun in the mid to late 70's. The burlesque shows were first class and the transvestite strippers were a hoot, especially if you had a guy in your party who didn't know the gag.

A US Marine took a wrong turn and was held in Mexico for almost a year. The US government worked for MONTHS to get him out of jail.
If something goes wrong hobbying/playing as civilians, what are the odds you'll make it home unscathed, if at all?

I just ran across this story and found it interesting.

Before everyone attacks me, I understand that the story is not talking about Mexico. I just thought it was interesting.

No hope sweetheart, even some of the major resort towns are getting dangerous.
