In addition to the high/euphoria you can get with other drugs, it has sexually stimulating effects (increased heart rate, sensation of heat and excitement, lowered blood pressure, increased sexual arousal). They also relax the muscles in the anus (and the vagina, but that's not really a consideration for gay guys), so I imagine that's a plus. Also, I assume the fact that it's a gas makes it more convenient to use in a number of settings than other recreational drugs.

P.S. I studied recreational drugs in college, I don't do them myself.
