Default Truvada 90% effective at preventing HIV?

I just read an article about Truvada being used as preventive medication. Negatives: It's expensive and you have to take a pill everyday.
Positives: It's 90% effective at preventing HIV infection.

Used alone, you'd be less safe than using a condom and you'd be wide open to every other STD.

Used with a condom, you'd nearly be bulletproof.

Have you heard about this drug?

Probably targeted to couples where one is HIV+ and the other doesn't want to be HIV+.

Kind of like trusting a bullet proof vest to save your life when you could just avoid getting shot at.

I think that ANYTHING you can do to lower your risk of contracting a fatal disease is worth serious consideration as a highly sexually active person. It definitely can't hurt, except maybe your wallet, although who can put a price on your life?

The price of the drug is high, but if it were more affordable I could see it being used by professional ladies just like birth control pills.

Birth control pills + condom use = best odds at not getting preggers.
Truvada + condom use = best odds at not getting HIV.
In both cases you take a pill every day.

Only simple minded people think these are either/or choices.

But they'd never dare say a negative word about birth control pills being DANGEROUS because everyone will stop using condoms. No, they save that silly argument for this life saving drug.

To correct your example, a condom would be a physical barrier like a bulletproof vest. Truvada would be like a magic potion that makes you nearly bulletproof. The safest option is BOTH.

Hm. That would be stage 3 of Tequila:

Stage 1: I'm rich.
Stage 2: I'm good looking.
Stage 3: I'm bulletproof.
Stage 4: I'm invisible.

People in long term relationships with poz people don't want to have to wear a condom every time they have sex for the rest of their lives.

An HIV+ person who is on proper medications (and is responding to them normally) will likely have an undetectable viral load. That plus Truvada makes sex with an HIV+ partner safer than sex with a stranger even if a condom is used.
