Evolutionary biology tells that that it boils down to symetrical features. Got them and you get laid. Dont and well, you dont.

Chihuahuas have notoriously bad eyesight - and taste. That's why some hump just about anything, legs, furniture, stuffed toys.
The Irish ones prefer shillelaghs.

Well, hope obviously does spring eternal in the male breast at least.
During my last visit to The Fare Room, I got so carried away by the appearance of positive regard, that I went out to The Lodge that night and asked for a legitimate, real-life date from the hottest stripper in the place. Whoa, Nelly. Ever take an icicle straight through the scrotum?

I used to think physical appearance was important to women as well. But from several comments in this thread, and several others over the years, it became apparent that the vast majority of women must share this attitude, that looks aren't important at all. I'm a believer.
I guess that explains why Jack Elam, Burton Gilliam, Slim Pickens, and John Candy were always in such great demand for leading roles as the romantic interest in love stories. And why John Ashton replaced Fabio on the cover of all those romance novels.

Note to self: In the future, consider whether it would be useful to add an explanation when using irony

the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.

Ironic that you would mention Burton Gilliam. He didn't end up in a TON of stuff but he is one of my favorite Western Comedians of all time. Also he's a pretty darn cool somewhat distant relative of mine also. Guess that makes me biased.
