I remember when I was in pee wee baseball and one of my teammates lost his dog. I guess we were about 8 years old and I remember laughing at someone losing a dog. To put things in context, my father wouldn't let me have a dog so I just didn't have any concept about how special a puppy could be.

Back in 1985 or so the wife and I bought a couple of dalmatians and it took that to see how one could call a dog their 'best friend'. To this day I miss our dogs. It took finally owning a dog to find out how special they can be.

Good luck and hope things go well for you. No matter if you get another pup or not, the new one will never replace Dodge.

Personally, I do not own a dog, but I do know about how a person can develop personal attachments to dogs or people.

When you are very close to someone, but then a sudden and unexpected lose can traumatize even a person who considers himself to be very strong.

OMG, this is a terrible loss, fish_fool, and as a person who considers my pups close family members (okay, furkids), and as a primary supporter of my local vet, I am SO sorry. I attempt to deny the fact that my 6 beloved geriatric chihuahuas will eventually pass, but when the inevitable happens, I'll be wailing in sackcloth and ashes and rending my garments - 6 damn times. Just unload the whole gun clip in my heart.

There are several versions of the following, based on the Norse Bifrost and Valhalla legend by author unknown, but I find this one poetic and comforting:

The Rainbow Bridge

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.

On this golden land, they wait and they play,

Damn, now I'm all misty-eyed. Again, my complete and heartfelt sympathy, darlin. Only time will dim this pain, but when you aren't feeling so raw, ask me sometime to tell you the story of when and why I took the plunge off the escort cliff. When my chihuahua Frosty sits in my lap I take her cute, soft wee head in my hands, look into her big, loving gray eyes, and say, "It's your fault I'm a ho, you little bitch." Wag, wag, wag, lick, lick, lick.

I'll raise a whiskey to Dodge tonight.

Been there, had to do it several times. Hated myself and got sick afterward every time, although it was the right thing to do. After nearly 18 years in the same house, I have a major pet cemetery in my back yard, with friends' animals there, too. I won't ever be able to part with the property.

After these chihuahuas, no more. I'm getting too old and emotional for my guts to be ripped out every time. I keep asking God why a dog, man's best friend, doesn't live as long as the man?

I am sorry to hear your loss. As I am reading your story, it brought to my mind the experience that we went through about 3 years back. My dog lived one month short of his 14th birthday. He was such a nice dog, he would always come to and look at you even if you are mad about something. Last 3 months of his life he went through a rough time. In my heart, I could not take him to the vet to put him to sleep. We were always praying for a miracle that he would become healthy. When we could not bear his suffering, my partner was on the phone talking to the vet to make an appointment to take him. As if though he understood what we were planning to do, he breathed his last breath. Even in his death, he did not want us to have any guilty feeling. What a sweet soul. Eventhough my kids are urging me to get a dog, I can not or will not replace him. Wish his soul, rest in peace.
