We've asked RIM to send us a PlayBook evaluator unit. They promised us one sometime during first quarter 2011. We'll see if it actually gets here. If so I'll post first impressions.
Preliminary reviews look good although I'm not too thrilled with the screen size. I like the big Kindle DX. The PlayBook is more the size of the regular Kindle.
As we understand it the PlayBook requires the use of a BlackBerry phone to get it on the net. Given that the experience might be different depending on which model BlackBerry you have. We only use the Storm 2 but I'm also planning to try it out with Mrs. Mazo's BB Curve to see if there's a difference. If you don't have a BlackBerry, though, I think you're out of luck.
One thing that does have us excited is that the PlayBook has significantly better security features versus the iPad. It turned out to be a piece of cake for our IT guys to snoop on the iPad and the Kindle. The PlayBook comes with BlackBerry enterprise security so we know that we can make it safe. That's an important feature for us - and, I assume, for the people on this board.
Once I get my hands on one I'll let people know what it's all about. It'll be several months before they hit the street, though.
Cheers,
Mazo.
