From where does humor come?

Maybe it was the delivery. My dog sits with a big smile on his face as I tell him jokes and scratch his neck and head.

Take a look at the book, "Phantoms in the Brain" by Ramachandran, 1993. It offers some insight, more into other mental phenomena like phantom limbs and foot fetishes (whoopie!) but it could be a good place to start that can guide you in further research.
