I know professionals who will not consider an offer for a new position or accept a new piece of business unless they know that the incumbent will not be rehired. I know others who make it a point never to criticize a fellow professional's work and will only market themselves based on their positive reputation and skills.

The point is to keep the competition from being personal or negative and to allow the decision to be made on objective factors such as price, availability, competency and overall performance.

Frankly, it may be custom that is dying, but it is admirable in an old-fashioned way.

A woman up in the Boston area asked for my assistance in a dispute between her and another woman. It actually was about a year ago. I gave her sage advice (ignore her, move on better things to do with your life). The other provider was damaging her reviews on another board (where the owner/mods are less than fair), so her ratings were going down. She asked me to post a review (without seeing her though I could create on based on a prior meeting) on the board for her and I refused that. I wasn't comfortable going there and again stressed not paying attention to her (the other provider), but when her books/numbers dropped she was at a loss. Fortunately her amount of business has returned to its prior levels and she is happy.
