Who is the best taylor in Austin?

Better labels? The first thing I learned about mens fashion was to ignore the labels and find the highest quality garmets out there - typically custom made. Simply put, there's nothing that comes close to the style or the quality of a truly great suit.

That said, if I was buying a suit "off the rack" by your definition, I'd head to Joseph A. Banks. Classic American styling, on site tailoring, and a damn fine quality suit - particularly for the price.

As for the "name brands" (Armani, CK, Versace, etc, etc)... realize that each design house makes several labels. The ones you truly think of when you hear Armani suit; those are not going to be 80% off. As mentioned above a top of the line Armani suit is 5K+ and will last you a lifetime.

As for tailors, I use a little Persian lady who works out of her house when I'm here in Austin. She was referred by a driver we use for big events.

I kindly gave the name of my "Tailor" in my first post, and ignored the negative comments, but to the OP, keep in mind that some of us are from here. Born and raised. I did take offense, but wanted to steer you in the right direction in any case.

Not to mention that I've lived in NYC, LA, Santa Fe, Paris and Oslo, in my 46 years, and still came home. I have found my hometown to be one of the most culturally diverse, freethinking cities, well, in this country! I don't know where and who you've been hanging out with since arriving here, but you haven't seen every side of this little town.

As far as tailors, and suits are concerned, I don't bother to own a 300 dollar suit. I have 9 Canalis in my closet (if unfamiliar, look them up online) all tailored to my specifications from Texas Clothier, one for every occasion, as well as a Canali tuxedo. I find any suit under a grand to be sub par, and wouldn't waste my money.

For the record, this Austin native doesn't even own said "crinkly" shorts.

The fact that anyone would take personal offense at a general criticism of and entire city is unfortunately what I'm talking about. Of course I'm making an criticism of the trend of people here, and it doesn't refer to any particular person. But the fact that so many people here are convinced of the superiority of this place, in opposition to all evidence, is what's making being here more and more unpleasant. Austin needs a lot of improvement, but it will never happen because so many people think the place has already arrived. I mean come on..the people of this town have never even built a art museum..of any kind...not even a small one. Even San Antonio has the McNay, even though I don't like what it's become. It would never occur to the people here that art is even important. Not when they can stroll down to Antones and listen to "the blues" all night, and share[staff edit of mention of illegal substance] with the owner till dawn [ah...those were the days].

I first came to Austin in 1979 and have also been coming back here over and over since then. The wonderful and unique things I used to find here are now overshadowed by sloppiness, hubris, and conformity. It's the way most people here now dress, speak, communicate, and the physical appearance of the place. For example, every era of this city's growth saw a diversity of architectural styles. But every building, residential or commercial, built in Austin in the last ten years has conformed to only one type. And it's not even a very good type. It's severe, cold, industrial, inorganic. I'm I wrong?

I really don't feel the need to engage with you, firstly because in almost every sentence of your post, you use an incorrect word somewhere, which gives me the impression that you aren't well educated, or at the very least, don't care enough about the impression you make here to proofread.

Maybe you will be happier in one of those "major" cities, with "real" art, and all of those real sophisticates. You know, like NYC! There are lots of suits there, and no beggars on any corners!

Yes, Sixx.

So, IMHO, we slackers here in Austin prefer to keep it local, since we are the BOMB, and have arrived! I purchase my suits and have them altered at Texas Clothier. I'm also fitted for my custom made shirts, (from a NYC tailor) at TC as well. Lots of great accessories can be found there, including a terrific shoe selection.

As far as "Taylor" is concerned, I haven't seen any of them yet, so cannot make a recommendation.

I will check out the Texas Clothier, but I think I will wait until I get to Europe to make any more purchases. I've decided I'm going to live in Italy for a while, and the clothes options there are second to none. Affordable too.

Ace tailors on 12th and Lamar next to the tavern is known for good tailoring. Personally, I have found Dillard's/Macy's to be a horrible place to buy suits. The sales people do not have a clue. I don't like the cut of a Jos. A Bank suit or a Brooks Brother suit. I am tall and slender and find a more modern cut, with a natural shoulder far preferable. The best suit prices I have found have been at the outlet malls in San Marcos. Last Call, Barney's and Zegna all have suits for between 300 and 500 dollars that are seem far superior to a Jos. or Brooks brother suit off the rack. Second chance seems like a good place for someone starting out to find a decent suit if you get lucky. About 4 of my old suits are on consigment there, and each is nice and not well worn, but not particularly up to date. Most men in suits I see have no clue as to how a suit should fit and I think most tailors err on the side of comfort rather then fit.

Finally, wearing a suit in Austin in the summer can absolutely suck balls. I highly recommend a summer weight suit, my favorites being seer sucker suits.
