Don't let these knuckleheads get you scared of sharks. They're just the oceans puppy dogs. As long as you don't look like food you'll be fine. Floating on the surface of the water on a surfboard looking a lot like a turtle can be hazardous. Diving, not so much. Bring on the music and play it loud.

I have to say, that after my first ever introductory dive in the Mediterranean Sea.. I am completely addicted to it. I didn't go down very far, about 9 meters.. but I was able to see all kinds of life and critters... starfish, crab, feeeeeeeesh! That had to be the CLEAREST water I have ever seen in my life. I had a blast, and I would have stayed down a lot longer if I was allowed.

I am seriously looking forward to going for my cert now !!!

Diving is a drug, very addictive. Glad you enjoyed.

I have never done the Med. I have only had the Gulf, Carribean, and Hawaii. (OK, don't count the untold number of times at Lake Travis as well as other lower viz lakes in Texas & Arkansas.)

Can you share pics? (I can think of all kinds of kinky ones, but the plain old pics of sea life are fine too.)

FYI, shallow dives are often better for a few simple reasons. As you go down deeper, the wildlife you find may be more limited. But most importantly, the deeper you go, the more the light is filtered. So, that brighly colored fish or coral at 9 meters (just under 30 feet) will be a dull grey at 100 feet.)

And of course, with regards to bottom time and air consumption, at 30 feet, you can stay down till you run out of air, perhaps an hour or more. At 100 feet, bottom time will literally be measured in minutes you can count on your fingers.

I stayed under for 64 minutes... and while I had an odd light headed dizzy feeling for about an hour after... I can't say I felt anything to make me worried... Might have been a tad dehydrated from the cocktails the night before. *wink*

Not the greatest of pics... do you KNOW how hard it is to get a fish to pose for the camera? Well.. do ya? :P
(The only ones I recognized were the puffer and horse..)

Unfortunately San Diego was never known for the fantastic dive options, but I still loved doing it. Hovering over the submarine canyon at La Jolla would have freaked the shit outof you Ze, but it was bad ass looking into the Abyss.

Convincing a fish to pose is difficult. Those were better pics of fish than I have ever gotten, so nice job. Eels and turtles sometimes make better subjects, they don't have the mobility of most fish.

It could have been dehydration, or it could have been the high you get from breathing compressed air for an hour. Might have been a little hyper-ventilating as well. Or just the adenaline.

You are hooked, no going back now.

On to bigger and better dives.

And wow, that is a good dive off of one tank for a beginner. I assume you were on scuba and not one of those hose jobs?

You should be able to go to any local dive shop and sign up for a padi cert. They will do all the classroom stuff at the shop then take you to a local lake that's used for dive training. They have sunken barges and things of that sort for you to enjoy. I was cert. in the Navy and had my kiddos cert. for vacations at the Caymans at a dive shop here in Ft. Worth.

Well, I picked up my NAUI dive books and dvd last week... I have been going through it slowly... I will be taking my class soon. I can't fucking wait! I feel overwhelmed a little with all this technical information I have to soak up... using my brain for too many thinkybits and I can't focus on the whole point of why I am doing it.. to go places for diving!

Does anyone have suggestions for a warm sunny dive spot that I should celebrate to in February? Somewhere that is not a 9 hour flight to get to... and has cheap cerveza?

Cozumel has some of the best diving in the world and only 2 hours or so away. Funjet has great specials and good dive shop can help you get the best out of it.
