1st response should always be local, and then if asked.

Pillage??? You have me confused with an Obama supporter who lives in New Orleans. We have video evidence from the last time. You also have a cognation problem. Conservatives want smaller, responsive government. It is anarchists (left winers like yourself) who don't want anyone telling them the rules and therefore no goverment. Unless, of course, it is a government that lets them do what they want. That is you baby.
You do realize that they would still be sitting in the water if someone hadn't come along and rescued them.

the question was...should that be a function of yhe Federal Government? Even if the states ask. How can TeaNuts call for the Federal Government out of their lives, EXCEPT WHEN IT NEEDS THEM. That sounds like our kids! Lol

Here is the opportunity for both sides to publicly state:
1. Should the Feds pour aid into New Orleans again, if there is major dammage?
2. Should the state of LA pour aid into New Orleans again, if there is major dammage?
3. How is this consistent with your view of government?
Consistent logic would be good, but I don't expect a lot of it. Let's see if either side is willing to speak BEFORE they see what is actually done. A bit more sporting that way.
Personally I will ask another question: since New Orleans is built on land that nature never intended to be a large, populous city, when will we STOP rebuilding it and rezone it as "not for habitation"? Just because people were foolish a couple hundred years ago shouldn't mean we stay stupid.
(I will point out that JDB ranted a bit but did not answer WTF's question.)

Where in the Constitution is the federal government authorized to provide disaster relief?
Where does it say state, local and private individuals and charities cannot provide disaster relief?
If we're going to be honest about the Constitution, which no one pays any attention to anymore, anyway, there is no authority for the federal government to provide disaster relief to anyone. It is supposed to be government of enumerated powers. That means it can only do what the Constitution specifically says it can do. Disaster relief is not among those items listed.
They will, anyway. And it will never be enough, no matter who is President.

I understand the governor of Louisiana is complaining about the slow response the Obama adminstration is responding to his requests.
You know I also thought that WTF and Ekim were a little smarter than the posts here indicate. Would you care to show me where the conservative movement has advocated NO government help for large disasters? You can't. The conservative moment has always been about measured response lead by local authorities. Old T can say lets do it now but the harm is already done. The Bacon Act should be repealed completely to help recovery operations. The Stafford Act needs to be gutted and rebuilt with some common sense. You do realize that other nations can't provide assistance with non union help or they break federal law? Do you know that federal law says that if a 75 year old hospital is destroyed then is HAS to be rebuilt exactly as it was before? The is a lot of work pulling the federal government back before we can truly see what things would be like.
