I have been a long-time lurker here and was on ASPD in the days of old. The illiteracy problem in this country was kept in the closet for a long time but with advances in technology and social media, made ubiquitous by mobile devices, it is out of the closet, and it ain't pretty.
Practitioners of mangled written language don't really care what you or I think. The anonymity of the internet reduces peer pressure and conformity to nil. Texting shorthand in emails, texting shorthand in forum posts etc. is the new norm. Auto-correction algorithms are the new mediators on questions regarding spelling and grammar. Wrongly auto-corrected words are now known as Cupertinos.
The upside to this is the ability to gauge the IQ level, attention to detail, and general reliability of the person you are communicating with
