Has anyone considered that one of the reasons state and local taxes have gone up is due to unfunded mandates from the federal government?

State and local tax increase are generally the result of poor decisions by previous administrations that made deals with employees for really bad retirment and pension plans.
Second to that is unfunded mandates by the feds.
For the most part, it really depends on which taxing authority that is hitting you up for your taxes.

This is the prime reason I live in a very modest, small house in the hood where my cost for the house was well within reason and so are my valuations.
The people in the hood know I am the crazy white dude that will not hesitate to fuck you up if you make the mistake of messing with my business.

but that is neither here nor there.

look and see how much federal $$ your state spends, then divide that amount by the number of taxpayers in your state, and thats how much you'll pay in state taxes to maintain your infrastructure and all that goes with it.

Independence has a price.

Done properly, the States would fund the federal government and not the federal government funding the states.

There is too much government spending at all levels. One thing that would really relieve local and state governments would be legalize, or at least decriminalize drugs. We have way too many people in jails and prisons simply because they are mentally ill and use drugs.

Portugal legalized drugs, and there was a noticeable drop in usage. We should do that here, and tax the sale of drugs properly and fund local treatment centers. It would take the drugs out of the hands of these kids who can't handle the life of crime, and turn it over to those who can, the corporations.
