Well, I need another hip replacement, but since I only have 2 hips, this will be the last one.



My insurance company doesn't know yet but they are in for another $100,000.

I've been reading about having this done in Bangkok for 10% of the price with beauties all for free.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I cannot speak to actual prices on hip replacement surgery. I can speak to hospitalization in Bangkok, for treatment of acute gastroenteritis with accompanying dehydration, at Bumrungrad International Hospital. Twice. Once for three days, once for one.

Bumrungrad caters to tourists and medical tourists. I've heard one report from a Thai that they are, by Thai standards, overpriced and not that good. By Western standards, they are excellent, and VERY reasonably priced, far less expensive than an American hospital, and, as far as I can tell, every bit as good and in some ways btter.

I did inquire once by email about hip replacement surgery, but did not receive a reply.

The key observation is that you should plan on spending a few days inpatient, and there is always the possibility of a post-op infection that doesn't show up immediately. Those can bounce you back into the hospital. You will need follow-up care for several weeks after you get out of the hospital, and you should include that in your planning if you choose to have surgery done halfway around the planet.

From what I have seen of Bumrungrad, in person, in their ER, in the hospital rooom, and in their outpatient clinic, I would have no particular qualms about talking to them for something like this.

Medical tourism is a growing industry. And there are many success stories. That being said, I suspect that there are likewise a few stories that you don't hear about that are horror stories, too. Of course the same can be said here in the U.S. The difference is that here in the U.S., you have some legal recourse if you're doc fucks you up. In Thailand, I suspect that is not true. A hip replacement is a fairly routine procedure these days, but I would still prefer to have it done at a good hospital in the U.S.

Already decided, but thanks for the input. Since the insurance company pays I'll have it done in the same hospital as the first one. That was like a 5* vacation.

Good luck with your hip surgery. My father had one done in a American Hospital in December. We buried him Tuesday.

I can't read what wave wrote because I choose not to. But he always said USA sucks and everythong overseas is better so............Or was it just Texas that sucks wave? all that money you made and tax subsidies you took advantage of.

Wait till next year and us tax payers can pay for your surgery.
