Anyone who could sing our national anthem as she did deserves our honor. It was very moving to alot of Americans.

Despite her human flaws...I have no problem with NJ lowering their flags to honor her.

ChrisObesity trolling for African-American votes, that's all. Smart move on his part, he's got to be near the head of the line for Romney's VP choice.

Setting aside speculation as to why he did it, it does seem odd. I'm trying to remember any celebrity that was honored with flags at half-mast...much less celebrities with the public problems Ms. Houston had over the last 12 or 15 years. I'm not against it, it just seems somewhat over the top for a singer, no matter how popular. Seems like the half-mast thing ought to be more about public service, not famous entertainers.

Don't we do it every time someone with a few hit songs passes away?

I think the only way you'd see heads exploding in here over the idea is if Barack Obama issued the order.

I think all drug addicts that can sing should be honored just like WH.

+1 Doove

It does bother me because I see men and women who have died while serving our country, why isn't the flag flown half for them? They've done more for our country than a singer.

Disappointed in his decision.

He is doing what politicians do, and we are all shocked, disappointed, ect. And please save the what we should do for teachers, service members, children, baby seals, ect. You could apply it to literally EVERYTHING so while we can all accept it as a universal truth pointing it out when you dont agree with something doesnt really add any value to your position.

Doove, once again you have - wait a sec. Doove, for once you are right! There's hope for you yet!

(Sorry, I have a reflex whenever you post. Glad I caught it in time.}

I have to agree with MsElena, too. There are many people who have died more noble deaths than Whitney Houston, who receive few, if any, accolades. Celebrity worship is out of control in this country. We are becoming a nation of morons, caring more about who wins American Idol than who wins for President.

Like that famous quote, "Give me liberty, or change the channel." Patrick Henry Kardashian

That's not his style. His MO is to show up at funerals and a pep rally breaks out.

I am a huge fan of Whitney Houston and her death and struggle with addiction was incredibly sad but I see this as a ploy for votes more than anything. It has no real substance and seems disingenuous to me.

Hawaii did more for Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole. Granted he was not a druggie . . . Even in life he was considered a Hawaiian treasure. They had IZ lie in state at the governors mansion for a week. It was a very big deal in the islands.

+1 I completely agree, and it is frustrating that our media glorifies such a thing. Yes it is sad the issues the WH went through in her past but geez, this is not uncommon for a human to have an addiction and die from it. I am tired of hearing about her misfortunes when she did this to herself just like others with addictions. Then to have flags lowered, news stations alerting the public on her funeral arrangements and such is kinda sickening.

Bob Hope had flags half mast in his honor, but then again he did a lot for the troops. That I can understand.

The only people that should be half mast are the rehab clinics.
