If Youtube had been around in the past, we could have watched Lincoln try to defend the suspension of the right of habeas corpus or FDR defend the internment of Japanese-American citizens.

The nature of the "war on terrorism" creates an environment in which it becomes extremely difficult to fight the war and preserve constitutionally protected civil rights at the same time.

It would be nice if there was a country where all of the Islamists lived that had clear borders. Unfortunately the Islamists live among us.

The next big Islamist terror attack on American soil is likely to result in something resembling martial law.

As time passes and Muslim imigration continues, Islamic terrorism in America will be increasingly done by American citizens with all of the guaranteed rights that go with that status.

America defeated the Germans and the Japanese but we didn't have to arrest them, Mirandize them and give them a court appointed attorney.

As has been said before, if we value security over liberty, we will have neither. Instead of protecting us from the enemy, the government will/has become the enemy.

It's a delicate balance. We have never had complete liberty. Even with all of the constitutionally guaranteed protection afforded by the Bill of Rights there can still be abuses.

Some people make the arugment that submitting to being searched at the airport violates probable cause and constitutes an unreasonable search. But practically speaking, can we let everyone on an airplane without being searched?

I understand the slippery slope argument when it comes to trading freedom for security; but the truth is we are on a slippery slope and we do have to make difficult decisions regarding the complete preservation of civil liberties when it may result in nuclear terrorism.
