My argument is that there are some industries that shouldn't be for-profit, health insurance being one of them. Making dividends because people get knocked off the rolls due to rescission and pre-existing conditions is B.S. United healthcare rakes in 3-4 billion in profits every year and they are jsut one of the big 3. people bitch about exxon but not that?

Just look at sports stars, musicians, brokers, bad businessman, failed banks, failed businesses, lottery winners, etc. In today's world a person can't measure wealth by how many dollars their holding onto. That is foolish! When a hyperinflation does hit this nation, the rich who measure their wealth in dollars who aren't prepared will be the ones screaming the loudest! They'll be the most affected by their poor decision for not properly preparing as they join the poor. The members of society that are already poor will be least affected because they were poor to begin with.

While I do agree with you that it's a persons own fault who puts theirself into poverty. But to say, "Eliminating them from the gene pool before they reproduce is a good thing," makes you sound like a spoiled rich kid who was born into privlege.

I believe this is closer to what we are up against than anything else I've heard. It's no longer a Democrat or Republican arguement anymore.

You don't read very well, do you? I was parroting the Republican drivel that you and others espouse. I no more think it's the fault of the poor than they find themselves in poverty than I think you can jump over the moon. But I am slightly reassured that you take some umbrage at eliminating the poor from the gene pool before they can breed. At least that sets you appart from most of the Republican Party.

I don't necessarily think that people born into a class have to remain there. It depends on the person whether they become poor or rich. Now there are cultural and psychological issues that have to be overcome in many cases, but there are many who are able to do it. I know you don't agree with John Boehner, Clarence Thomas or Herman Cain, but they are stories of people who overcame quite a bit to get where they are today. In fact, my Grandmother was born into poverty, but she went to school, apprenticed at a law firm, and in the 1920's became the second woman in her state to become a lawyer, back when the women's rights movement was just starting to earn some victories. And (seriously) please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there are any states which allow a person to sit for the bar exam without graduating from an accredited law school anymore.

I still think there are way too many barriers to entry for many small businesses and professions, but not all these barriers come from government. There are many corporations who like to quash small, innovative startups who may one day present a threat to them.

But eliminating the poor from the gene pool is bad policy. It will make it harder for rich folks to find people to look down upon.

Many people make heroic efforts to overcome huge barriers. Others are born without a cut dog's chance through no fault of tneir own and their life's story is written before they even set foot inside a schoolhouse. Those in the last group couldn't accomplish something if Christ himself ordained it. And lots are in that vast territory in between. But far, far too many are in the group that never have a cut dog's chance.

In theory, I am correct. However, practical experience supports your observation.The argument between "can't make it" or "won't make it" is semantics. The fact remains many "don't make it," and that is the sad part.
