Uhg!!! This is the most misused stereotype, and no I am not Mormon. Mormons actually cherish the fact of single man and single woman union. If you look into their value system, marriage ceremony, and even death beliefs you will see this.
Here is a little insight on this bad stereotype. When the Mormons first traveled westward in search of their "Zion" (or their holy land like Jerusalem) they journey was treacherous and the cost of many male lives. Once they came upon, what is now Salt Lake City) they settled. However their journey was costly and population thinned. Many Females however many males had perished. Therefore they had justified polygamy to repopulate their numbers. The used some old biblical doctrines to support this.

Sometimes, God commands his followers to practice polygamy to raise up seed unto Him." However just as all things, what happens as a good cause turns ugly. It became an ongoing tradition long after it was needed. They finally of coursed stopped it. However the men or other men who liked polygamy kept practicing it and used "Mormonism" to justify their actions even if they didn't believe or were truly Mormons.
