That's definitely one of the scenarios. Many Canadian cities are much more affordable than Austin, even Dallas sometimes.
Difference could be the social and religious stigma. US is much more Puritanical than Canada. This might keep from enough competition coming into the market to drive prices down.

Actually, that Puritanism is what will keep it from becoming legalized in the US anytime in the foreseeable future. It'll be at least a couple of generations, probably more, before any serious discussion of legalizing prostitution on a national basis in this country can occur.

I hate to turn the discussion political, but did anyone see Ron Paul's discussion of legalizing drugs on Daily Show clip? I assume his view of this topic would be the same.

Good point, probably why there aren't as many strippers out there as would be in an uninhibited society. It's ridiculous the bi-polar like relationship our society has with sex. Everyone secretly loves it but isn't allowed to be open about it. I think prices in areas where is is legal (Henderson county, NV) aren't nearly as affordable in Canada and other foreign countries.
I think Butch Hancock summed up our convoluted sexual viewpoints best: Life in Lubbock, Texas, taught me two things: One is that God loves you and you're going to burn in hell. The other is that sex is the most awful, filthy thing on earth and you should save it for someone you love.

Legalize it! It is less hassle & less money, safer, and the societies that allow it seem more acceptable to it.
As someone that started hobbying in Germany, I disagree with folks like Wyldeman (deliver the mail, protect the borders & stay the hell out of my life) on this one.
1) there are the FKK clubs, run by people that can afford the investment in a big mansion. An entry fee of about $75 gets you in the door & $75 buys you 30 minute sessions with the woman you fancy. The menu offering is good, so any tourist can just get there and have a great time without having to do all the homework. The only thing comparable to the women is the SC scene here. In these clubs, all the women are walking around topless, with a towel wrapped around their waist ...as are the guys.
Saunas, lockers for your money, beds to take a nap, swimming pool, masseuses on site, free lunch and dinner & soft drinks, showers, all the clean towels you need. An adult 3 to 5 star candy store at rock bottom prices compared even to BP rates. This is a good one outside Frankfurt
http://www.fkk-oase.de/Outdoor
2) the Indie's are girls who come from eastern Europe, or anywhere in the world can rent a room in the famous red light districts. Row after row of buildings, 6 to 7 floors tall, each floor with 5 to 10 rooms. Just walk up & down, check out who you like & you could get a quickie for as little as $50
For the most part, it is common to find a really pretty young student who is just visiting for a couple of weeks to make some spending money. I'd go back up to one of those rooms a couple of weeks later & someone new would be there.
These places get busier as it gets later with large groups of inebriated hobbyists walking around; get there early & you can find freshly showered and clean smelling ladies. Most do not have showers, but just a basin. Not full GFE like the FKK clubs
3) Streetwalkers are also legal & available in certain cities like Berlin where there is no red light district. It can be thrilling (so I disagree with Sixx on his comment)
4) The escort scene is also vibrant. (The only scene here.)
All this with the cops looking out for you as you walk around checking the scenery; no need to stake out the cheap motel for a sting, or worry about which pimp recorded your license plate
There is some amount of pimping with bad guys luring young women to come across the border. You see it on the news & stuff.

Liquor, Gambling, and Prostitution...
...in that order.
Howdy, Folks!
Since we're playing "what if," I'll throw in my 2¢.
Firstly, I don't see it happening any time soon in Texas.
As stated in my title, I figure we'll see decriminalization in that order.
Alcohol consumption has already been decriminalized in Texas.
Social gambling has become "acceptable" again in the mainstream, and I'm *sure* there's state gub'mint types that would LOVE to see some tax revenue from the money that's changing hands in private house parties.
Easiest way to do that is to decriminalize gambling, and have legalized - and taxable - casinos.
That will probably come next.
Far down the list, prostitution may get decriminalized.
As Kosher pointed out earlier, though - there will always be a market for activities which will not take place in a government sanctioned brothel that will never go away.
If for no other reason - the rules for using a state approved brothel/state approved sex workers might be so stringent and red-tape infested, folks would simply hobby as they have always done because it's just simpler.
Speaking of simple:

I thing a LOT of *potential* Hobbyists are out there, and if prostitution options were as simple and as easy as Elephant has outlined - they would partake.
Purchasing liquor in Texas is relatively simple(although I love how in New Mexico you can buy alcohol in grocery stores and pharmacies!).
It's gotta be this simple for folks to partake in it, otherwise, there's no business - and therefor no profits and tax revenues - so there's really no need to even go about decriminalizing it in the first place.
~~~~~~~
Pricing - would it go up, or down?
Government regulation tends to hamper free enterprise, and that is one thing about The Hobby in its current form that fascinates me - it is an amazing example of capitalism in action.
[Truth be told - Eccie is actually one hell of a economics class. It is very much worthy of study.]
IF prostitution were legalized in Texas, I predict that initially, there would be an increase in pricing as folks attempt to start up "legitimate" businesses.
After a while, there would be a glut of offerings on the market with a flood of employees from women(not to exclude the guys, but let's face it - male providers are kinda rare) who think because they were born with a vagina they have a built in business in between their legs. Prices will drop.
Truth be told - it takes a very special person to be a provider, and be able to do the work a provider does. The amateur women that think they could to it - won't. They will be unreliable, their services will be sub-par, and before you know it - they'll be doing something else.
Because of the poor quality service and glut of workers on the market for a time, the prices will go down.
Then...
The numbers of providers will shrink as those that can't do the work get out of the biz, and prices will go up as demand once again exceeds supply.
Pricing will then probably level out, much like it has in Nevada.
Honestly, I think we'll see legalized gambling - and maybe even medical marijuana - before we see legalized prostitution in Texas.
Then again - I could be wrong...
Happy Hobbying!
More people would be doing it if it was legal. More competition for the ladies, more choice for the fellas. Instead of having to go to the next town over, someone on your street would be providing. So convenience is a factor. Prices would go down IMO. Another thing, waaay more adultry would be occuring. So divorce rates would spike up from the current 50% to 90% OR less people would be getting married.
Everything would be safer for the women because if we were violated, attacked or robbed, we could press charges. So providers would become less targets to criminals. Criminals would move on to robbing/scamming little old ladies.
Howdy, Folks!
Actually, I feel that divorce rates would probably go DOWN, for the very reasons you provide.
1. There would probably be more adultery due to ease of availability of legalized prostitution.
However - as there would be less of a need for using something that can create a trail of evidence(call logs in a cell phone, web browser histories, etc.) that currently exists to facilitate an illicit tryst, it will be a WHOLE lot harder for a spouse to prove adultery.
Also - if the model were to become as Elephant stated:
And this was a cash deal - it gets REAL hard to prove.
Add to this the very real possibility that with the outlet of easily obtainable sexual release in exactly the way The Hobbyist wants it that The Hobbyist is NOT getting at home - there may actually be LESS of an incentive for The Hobbyist to get divorced.
Many folks may not be getting what they want out of their relationship with their spouses, but - they may actually LIKE their spouse, or at least like having someone else around. if there are children in a relationship, there is yet more incentive to remain together.
So...on this side of the coin - divorce rates might go DOWN.
2. Fewer people might certainly get married.
However - sex isn't the only reason to get married, and in fact - people historically got married for many other reasons. Sex was WAY down on the list - folks got married for political reasons, they wanted to join two families together, it was expected from you if you were of a certain age and certain social class, you name it. Getting married because the sex is good is much more of a modern invention, and in reality is much more of a fantasy than the hobby is - and quite possibly chemically induced, to boot.
Anyways...
If prostitution were decriminalized, the current pool of available, single folks to get married that wanna get married will probably stay about the same, maybe taking a small dip.
[I'm not married for many reasons, one of them being that I realized at a fairly young age that Hobbying was a viable option and after doing the math, I figured it was a more cost effective one. Buddies of mine that also Hobbied - and continue to do so - got married. So, I really don't see it changing much - prostitution is always available, legal or not. Those that wanna get married for whatever reason will continue to do so.]
Because decriminalized prostitution would be available to them and they actively REJECT it in favor of marriage, the likelihood of these couples divorcing down the road is even less than the folks that didn't have decriminalized prostitution as an option before they got married.
Again - overall divorce rates go down.
Then again - we're playing the "what if" game.
Happy Hobbying!
Staff Edit...Forbidden Topic...Spacemtn
I kind of hate the idea of the government throwing its support behind something one way or the other, and that is what happens when the govt regulates anything. Who is to say prostitution is really good for society? maybe it is, maybe it isn't. maybe people just like making excuses for getting their dick wet, who knows.
same with the War on Drugs. I think it's a costly and stupid battle, but I also don't think drugs are good for society. To be fair, I consider drugs much more dangerous than prostitution, I'm not trying to necessarily equate the too, just the recent debates about legalization and its costs/benefits to society.
I suppose I'd just prefer if the government would quit its gestapo tactics in trying to regulate very private things. Who knows, maybe legalizing these things would work. I personally don't think it will, and I personally wish it would quit being fascists about how they prosecute these sorts of things, quit wasting tons of money, and instead treat it more like a slap on the wrist.
Like getting a traffic ticket. You get enough of those you'll alter your behavior and perhaps not be as reckless and obnoxious about it, so that's what I'd prefer. just my .02 cents, but lots of interesting opinions on here.
if it become legalized and somewhat normalized, I wonder if they'd start having like technical schools or 2 year degrees for providers.
i kid i kid.
but seriously, if it was normalized, would women really aspire to be providers like they would other jobs?
lmao. Your BBBJCIM list would be like getting a scholarship to MIT or Stanford, they are well on their way.
Humpty could hold seminars on the art of creampies for some of the chicks who have to advertise in other ways.
