That's blasphemy Fritz. That would be like a good Irishman drinking Protestant whiskey. You do have some damn good choices on your list though.

A lot of places already mentioned are on my list.

Mexican - Rudy's Tenampa Taqueria, Margarita's, Habanero's, Salty Iguana
Asian - Bo Ling's, Kona
Steak - Capitol Grille, Outback (I've had one of my best steaks there), Plaza III
Italian - Carmen's, Italian Delight (more a semi-fast food Italian)
BBQ - Jack Stack, Oklahoma Joe's, Gates (not the best, but sometimes a beef and a half just hits the spot)
Pizza - Italian Delight, d'Bronx's, Waldo Pizza, Pizza Shoppe, Minsky's...I like pizza
Deli - d'Bronx's, Browne's
Breakfast - First Watch, Chubby's (also great after bars food)

75th street? Mmmmm. They have my new favorite beer! Tres Pistoles. Very much in the ilk of Guiness.

And yes, their Brownie is something else! The red velvet cake they serve on special occasions is most excellent, too.

Talk about blasphemy (and I am 1/2 Irish, BTW), my favorite BBQ is Tony Roma's - had their baby backs in Las Vegas about 21 years ago and have never found another place, even in KC, that could match the flavor and tenderness (been to the ones in KC, Miami, Omaha, Seattle, Dallas). And what I like about Famous Dave's is the two-meat platter with the roast 1/4 chicken and sausage link - again, both have great flavor.

Although, many will chime in and tell me I am wrong - there really isn't one.

Good sushi takes the fish to the table in hours, not the day or two it takes to fly it in.

There's a reason some of those chain restaurants are so successful. They couldn't do it if their food was horrible.

Have to disagree with you on that, Papa.

I know of some chains who have horrible food ( in my humble opinion ) American's love the feeling of similarity, knowing what the food is going to be (even if it is so-so) and what the "cookie cutter" is going to feel like. That's a big reason why people keep going back.

Plus, the local places cannot compete with the chains. They don't get discounts for mass purchasing and cannot afford to spend $$$ on advertising. Nor can they afford to buy or rent the prime locations.

Most chains have pretty boring food, as they are trying to appeal to everyone. Rarely do you find authentic "ethnic" food in a large chain.

But that is my opinion. The masses disagree as they run to Applebees, Perkins, Olive Garden, Cracker Barrel and the like.

Didn't have the patience to read through 983 posts, but I have one in case it has not been said yet...

Name: Blanc Burgers & Bottles
Location: Plaza, Old location of UNO Pizzeria next to Bank of America, KCMO
They were located in Westport on Westport road, but made the transition to the Plaza with their grand opening last Thursday.
Just added 2 new burgers to their menu:
(1) Surf & Turf type...Kobe Beef with a Lobster Tail (Mmmmmm Yummy)
(2) Braised Beef stuffed Kobe Burger (Promising)
Also expanded their beer menu as well with a full bar. Their burgers are a little on the fancy side, but they are freaking delicious. They serve their fries (regular or sweet potato) in these metal grocery cars that have lil brown grocery sacks inside the cart housing the fries.
This place is cute, delicious and definitely worth a try!!!

Have to say Blanc Burgers is one of my new favorites. Sure it's a little fancy for a burger joint, but they're damn good. Don't forget about the Flea Market in Westport though.

For Mexican I like Los Tules, on Broadway across from where they are building the new performing arts center. Family place where lots of native speakers go to eat. Always a good sign.

Italian is Gorozzos. Love the feel of the old neighborhood even if it isn't so italian anymore.

I won't get into the bbq war. I like different places for different stuff.

Strouds (up north off I-35) had the best fried chicken. I could drink a bowl of their gravy.

I should have clarified. I didn't really mean all chains. A place like Capitol Grille is a chain that has magnificent food. I've been to the other local steak houses in town (Golden Ox, Hereford House, Plaza III, the Savoy, etc) and the only one that comes remotely close to Capitol Grille is Plaza III.

BTW, you mentioned Cracker Barrel. They have great breakfast food (never had their lunch/dinner food). And I agree with you about some chains as well. Olive Garden and Red Lobster and I cannot stand, but that is my own personal taste, others love those places. Applebee's, Chili's, and TGIFriday's are tolerable. PF Chang's in good. At what point do we consider something a chain (Gates, Minsky's, etc)? Is it just when it goes to another town?
