Deep Ellum Downer
Friday night me and some buddies went to Trees in Dallas to go see Eric Sardinas tear it up. I have not been to Deep Ellum in a few years and was petrified by how much it had turned into a ghost town.
I know there was a thread on aspd that metal_head started (I think) but can't remember the details.
Anyhow, not very many people at the show (maybe 30-40) and he is a national act. Ate across the street at Crickets which has been open since November - good burgers and a cute, young redhead works there.
I heard the decline is because of higher rent put on the tenants - any other ideas and if there will be an incline in the future?
BTW, if you like the blues, Eric Sardinas is phenomenal and left me in awe!

Deep Ellum used to be fun, but most have migrated away to other scenes. The area is a little rundown, but I heard they were attempting to bring back "life" into the area.
I migrated to Addison. Lot's of variety, competitive pricing, free parking, safe neighborhood, and the whole stratosphere of people from 20-50 years old.

well there's your answer. you stopped going, as did a LOT of other people. some say it was the influx of certain types of clubs that ran off a lot of folks.
I'd say rent can still be had for $1 a sq/ft down there. city hall started requiring specific use permits (as they wanted to bring in developers to turn it into another McLoft area with chain stores and the like) and that kinda makes it a pain to open any new spots.
a lot of good bands skip Dallas these days. a lot of the scene has gotten older (including me) and lost interest. hopefully Trees and the newly opened LaGrange place, along with Lounge on Elm Street, can maintain the area until more folks can afford to develop things. I'll be down there for D.R.I. this week!

As will I! I'm going with my buddy who said that's the only band he has ever dived twice off the stage and moshed to - should be a good time!
As for LaGrange, I thought it was a Christian club because of the bands on the marquee playing the weekend - JC Experience and the Heelers! But the girls next door at Crickets confirmed it's a regular club. Reno's also seemed cool as hell.
I quit going to Deep Ellum mainly because of my band took hiatus and there were alot better things closer to home here in Fort Worth.
Suite270, I've only been to Black Fin and Duke's in Addison but don't go anymore because there are closer locations closer to me now - Black Fin (Arlington Highlands) and Dukes (Bedford).

I live close to Addison, and you can have young pretty girls busted hump to make you happy (Twin Peaks), or you can groove to the band at Dukes, or you can have a 5-Star steak (too many to list), or you could have Martini's strait from a beer tap (Kenny's Wood Fire Grill), or you could go for a laugh (Comedy Club), or you can eat all the sliced Brazilian style beef you can fit in (Fog de Chao), or......... I could go on forever here. I will be moving to Addison someday, although, I live fairly close now

I hear the a very popular band called the toadies was playing there on New Years Eve. I wanted to go, but I heard also that it wasn't like it use to be. And I was really scared of the crime too.

Tara, I heard the Toadies kicked ass even though they're not as popular as they once were in the 90's. Trees is the exact same as it used to be before it closed down. Crime doesn't seem like a problem since there is no one to rob, haha!

And I will buy dinner and the tickets... Tara on one arm and Berkleigh on the other arm... not a bad way to spend the evening (even though I don't care for the Toadies).

Wow, anyone remember Slow Roosevelt? They were my favorite local band like 10 years ago
Those were my "angry" years, LOL.

Yes they are, Nicole. I believe they played Trees when it opened back up last year after breaking up in 2006(I think that was the year). I've been watching them play since 1996. My sister dated the singer, Peter, briefly in 1999, haha! I enjoyed the local scene during those years.
