Curious about the worth of suppressors. To be honest, the only thing I know about suppressors is what I've seen in the movies. Just a quiet 'thump'. However google has this to quote,
Quote:
9mm pistols can be reduced from 160 decibels to the 127-131 range. . 45 ACP pistols can be reduced from 157 decibels to the 129-137 range.
|
In the case of the .45, the noise being reduced from 157 decibels to 129 decibels doesn't seem like much.
So for the money spent and the big time waits to receive the stamp and suppressor, it really doesn't look worth it. Again I was expecting a simple thump, but maybe I've seen too many movies.
This youtube video kind of verifies this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3qXXRqeXIw

A shot from a suppressed firearm is not merely a “simple thump.” A threaded barrel will be necessary. Some autoloading handguns will require further modifications to run reliably, when suppressed. The hot gases, being trapped, to muffle the sound, will result in the weapon becoming quite warm.
The use of a suppressor does not remove the need for the wearing of hearing protection.
I decided that a suppressor would be “worth it,” to me, if used on a proactive pest-control weapon, but, none of our family’s rural-enough parcels of land are in places where it is legal to be shooting things. (Most densely-populated Texas counties require that shooting be done on parcels of land that are 10+ acres in area.)
So, personally, even though I think a suppressed firearm would be a barrel of fun, it has not seemed to be worth the bother or expense, at least for now. The fun factor does not yet outweigh the expense/bother factor part of the equation.

I have a suppressor on my S&W Victory semiauto pistol .22.
With subsonic rounds it's quieter than a pellet gun.
That being said, I would hold off on buying one. I think they will be stamp free soon.
Don't waste the extra $200.
Most cans are way overpriced imo. Maybe they'll get cheaper when the atf takes them off their list.

If I got a .300 blackout upper for my AR (S and W M and P 15 Sport III), would that be better? It appears that the .300 blackout is subsonic.
Maybe getting something like having the power of an AR related weapon firing with just a thump is something for the movies, not real life.
Here is a quick youtube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyB6Bq0QpiU
Now that the supreme court has ruled that bump stocks are legal, maybe check into one of those again. I had one before they were ruled illegal and got rid of it. It took a while to make them work right, maybe get off 10 rounds, but I only achieved this once or twice. Several times I got off about 5 rounds, but it's not like you can pick up an AR with a bump stock and get it to fire like a regular machine gun.

Silencers: Why? Don't you want folks to know you're firing? Gas buildup will heat up the barrel.
Bump stocks? Why? Everyone at our place can empty a clip quickly. Simply aim and do finger exercises. Seriously, a well maintained tool will empty itself quickly. And btw, trigger assemblies can be customized for small hand folks.

Suppressors are a thing. There is a reason for their popularity. I got my first one in the 90's when only two shops in the Houston area could sell them. It was a PIA then, had to set up a corp., it avoided permission from the Chief LEO. Trusts became a thing later. It'll really piss you off when you have to drop another $200 to transfer a NFA item you have in your safe from your corp, to your trust. Big news is the 6-12 months you used to have to wait has dropped considerably. I have a few, bought some, made some (legally of course). Last one I made, filled online and had the stamp in less than three weeks. Hopefully some of the new legislation will make it as easy in the US as it is in Europe to get a suppressor. Just finishing a 9mm AR build with one, uses Glock mags.
No reason to buy a .300 BLK unless you plan on suppressing it. Too many better calibers to choose from if not.
Generally other than a threaded barrel you don't need to modify a Browning type pistol (tilt barrels) for a suppressor to work. However, you do need a booster on the suppressor for it work reliably. The booster is also known as a Nielsen device. So it goes on (or in) the can, not the gun.
If you want to see what unregulated cans cost, check out some of the prices you can find from UK gun shops. They are stupid cheap. A buddy used to talk about taking suppressed bolt action .410 shotguns to the city dump and shooting rats for fun on weekend evenings when he lived there. Some of the best designs are over there. (they refer to them as 'moderators'.)
You can buy a silencer for a .22lr for less than $20.
https://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk...ors/moderators
Down sides are there also. The can can get really hot, not so much the barrel, a hot can will get you quick. Thermal covers are becoming a thing for them, safety and heat mirage control. You also can get some gas blowback on some rifles. There are ways to mitigate the gas blowback though. Always wear eye protection.
You guys really need to check them out so you understand what the real deal is.

I was never in the service and never got to fire a machine gun or a silenced weapon. In high school I was in NJROTC and as a senior was more or less a senior who taught a class of freshmen the basics of being in NJROTC, and no, I didn't yell and scream. In training we used old Springfield 03's and when we made rare trips to the range, they only turned us loose on .22 rifles. And before they drop me 6 feet under I want to know how cool it is to fire a machine gun or suppressed weapon. However everything I want to do in terms of weaponry, I want to be very safe and legal.
If anybody thinks I'm ridiculous, visit this site drivetanks.com. It's a business formed for persons like myself. I have no ambition to drive a tank, but tossing a grenade, firing a M2, firing a M60, firing a couple of clips from a garand, maybe a clip of automatic grease gun, would be right up my alley. https://www.drivetanks.com/machine-gun-shooting/
My sun is setting in the western skies and I've really done most of the stuff I never thought I would. Driving a car in a 9 second quarter mile in a modded Hellcat running on 93 octane, done. All my sexual fantasies happened between 1999 and 2006 when I was deep in the hobby, done. Saving a life, done. Coached ********** and saw the end results of amazing men I always knew they could be when they played for me. Taught other coaches that we could coach recreation ball not yelling and screaming, but using positive inspiration. Making it through 3 months of pole climbing school, where you had 1 inch of metal between being safe and falling 45 feet, done. Did math that I never dreamed I could do in high school. So, yes, I've had a great run, but there are still more things I want to accomplish.
My father was of the greatest generation and during WWII fought with Patton during the Battle of the Bulge and after, which he rarely talked about to being the first troops ever to liberate a concentration camp, which he never talked about, because of the horrors he saw. I do know we would talk about the weapons he used which were the M1 carbine which he hated, to the grease gun, which he hated, to his beloved garand. He was also 'redrafted' to work the Berlin airlift, feeding people who really couldn't feed themselves. In an organization I joined, he initiated 3 degrees on me as the head man, and during my teen years supported me in a youth organization in which I received highest honors.
So yes, before my run is over, there are some things I want to do, mostly being military related. So if wanting a suppressor is odd, guilty as charged and if wanting to fire a machine gun, guilty as charged. I'm surely not some soldier wanna-be, but there are some small arms stuff I would love to do. No tanks or artillery needed.
