Usually it comes when people have some tech background either professionally or a fairly deep hobby level.

For me its both, and though it caused me to be very introverted in life it has given me a good income. And the people who made fun of me early one not seek out my skills.

The nice thing about my learning is it was not all "white hat"
(white hat = legal and proper Black Hat = the hacker, street wise type and now their are grey hats those who got their skill set from both and usually are called "Ethical Hackers")

The more you know how to use technology the more useful it becomes. You will seek out nifty programs or apps to do things for you and make life easier.

What Busty was talking about is basic firewall blocking.
Ghost Rider is correct that there can be a decent paycheck for the techs.
Also correct that knowing how to use it, it becomes very useful, even if not for a paycheck.

Congratulations on acquiring skills to automate cogent security policies. Others would not know a firewall or iptables acl if it licked them in the face.
