Relying on "faith in humanity" in the Middle East is a fast way to get yourself killed.

I agree it's a big strategic setback for Putin and - equally important - Iran's ambitions for establishing a politically dominant "Shia crescent" stretching across the Levant.

But if you think the head of the rebels taking over in Damascus is "our asshole" - then you are as naive as those Obama foreign-policy dunces who believed the 2011 "Arab Spring" would usher in an era of freedom and democracy throughout the Arab world lol.

The main rebel faction, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has been designated by the US and other countries as a terror group. It used to be allied with al Queda. The US even has a $10 million bounty out on its leader, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani.

But somehow you think he's "our asshole"? Glad you're not in trump's new Cabinet. You'd be laughed out of the Situation Room.
