New York Democrat proposes secession to join Canada, opposing Trump

New York Democrat proposes secession to join Canada, opposing Trump

(NewsNation) — A top New York Democrat isn’t satisfied with the presidential election outcome. Her solution? Join Canada.

State Sen. Liz Krueger, whose district includes Manhattan, floated the idea that the Empire State should secede from the United States and become a province of Canada to protest President-elect Donald Trump’s policies on things like mass deportation.

“It’s not unreasonable to think outside of the box,” Krueger said to Politico this month.

She first proposed secession in September before the election was decided.

“I thought I would suggest to Canada that instead of us all trying to illegally cross the border at night without them noticing, which is pretty hard because there’s a lot of us, that they should instead agree to let us be the southeast province, a new province of Canada,” Krueger said in an interview with news outlet City & State New York.

Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont, along with New York, would combine into “a great new province as the southeast province of Canada,” Krueger said, though she admitted she had not received agreement from the other states’ leaders.

Krueger, who is the chairwoman of the state Senate Finance Committee, also proposed holding back federal taxes — a more likely occurrence than becoming a Canadian province.

“We’re talking a lot of money,” Krueger said to Politico in November of the $85 billion federal aid in jeopardy under Trump, who has vowed to cut federal spending. “We’re talking money we couldn’t possibly replace unless we started sending the feds a lot less money.”

Forty-four percent of voters, or about 3.4 million people, in New York cast their ballot for Trump in the 2024 election.

Secession talk always seem to gurgle up following a national election.

Like the ones here in Texas.

New York would be rejected by Canada as NY is worthless and sucks down huge amounts of federal tax funds.
However, Texas can go as long as it's north border is along Hwys 82 and 62.
Amusing that the guys pushing that have found themselves nice paychecks.

You should look at the numbers. Federal taxes collected vs federal funds spent.

You’ll find that New York gives more than it takes. Considering that Wall Street is still the financial capital of the world that makes sense to me.

Take a look at Florida. They are listed as one of the least dependent on federal funds but I wonder if Social Security taxes and payments are included in the results.
