Josh Dobbs should have been the heir apparent. Before they drafted Kenny, before they signed Trubisky. Dobbs was right there on the practice squad.
It should also be noted that the Steelers, historically, are not very good at evaluating QB play. Basically, in 90 seasons, you have Bradshaw and Ben, and then dozens and dozens of duds.

Kordell Stewart had his moments as well. Made the Pro Bowl in 2001 and lead the Steelers to a 13-3 record that year and an AFC Championship game appearance.
Neil wasn't a dud, but none of us can really forgive him for the two SB INT.
Bobby Layne was very good.

You think we have had bad luck picking QBs, could be much worse. Cleveland with all its disasters! Lol
Jets, Bears, Lions, etc, etc. Arguably the hardest position in pro sports.

Forgot about Neil O'Donnell. He was pretty good, too.
Kordell and Maddox had their moments, but neither was ever an "elite QB" imo (have no idea how Kordell made the Pro Bowl, but hey, so did Trubisky lol). Bubby had the one (almost two) playoff win(s).

Threw for 3100 yards and 14 TD, ran for 530, and lead the team to a 13-3 record and AFC championship appearance. Very solid season. The stats don't look tremendous by today's standards, but that was back when defenses could get away with a lot more. Kordell takes a lot of shit but he was exciting. I was happy to see him honored at a recent game.

Amazing what a coaching change and actually throwing the ball downfield and over the middle can do.
And stop the presses, we ran play action a few times! Didn’t think it was possible for this team to do these things. Lol

Canada coached over 40 games without a single game of over 400 yards of offense. One game without him and they go over 400. Definitely not a coincidence. As you said Charley, they threw downfield and over the middle, they ran a lot of play action, and they were a lot less predictable.

Offense looked.... better. Still a lot of work to be done. Still haven't won a game without the defense saving their asses. But... better.

My only complaint is I can do without Johnson. He makes approx $1 million per game and can’t be bothered to try and make a tackle on a fumble recovery.
Locker room cancer and not good enough to allow it.

Play action and Over the middle: The whole towns been screaming for it. Hopefully next they actually score a lot.

... Look-about the whole league there, mates.
Our side doesn't look any worse than the so-called
contending teams - and maybe better than others.
... Like it or not - the Steelers are gonna ride this out
with Kenny Pickett... They surely feel he's better than
Mitch or Mason. ... Got the Arizonia Cardinals next week.
Hopefully, our lads will continue to march on!

Whatever other opinions there are about Tomlin, it is really apparent that he has a very glaring deficiency in at least one aspect of his job - instant replay challenges. He rarely wins the challenges he does make, and yesterday he basically cost the team a touchdown with a winnable challenge he failed to make. His explanation of it quite frankly is ludicrous. He said he didn’t see the play because he was “blocked”, and the Jumbotron didn’t show any replays. Really? In the year 2023, with all the technology available, you are relying on what the coach can see from the sideline and the stadium Jumbotron? Come on man, there has to be someone in the booth with an iPad or something who could look at the replay and tell Tomlin to throw the freaking flag (or in most cases don’t throw it).
Instant replay challenges can win or lose games. Tomlin needs to have a chat with Mike Sullivan, the head coach of the local hockey team not the new play caller, and get some better ideas about how to handle replay challenges. The Penguins are really good at it - they very rarely lose challenges or miss opportunities to challenge. I do know one thing they have that the Steelers don’t - a person whose only job it is to look at plays and determine whether or not to challenge. The Steelers are a multi-million dollar organization; surely they can afford to hire someone to handle this.

Shouldn't be too tough against the Cards and the Patriots the next couple games. But beware the false sense of confidence that will surely be coming. Kenny is still decidedly mediocre.
