I would recommend an airless spray gun like a Wagner for painting or staining furniture. I use an air compressor for car paint because it is much thinner but a real hassle with water and oil filters and getting the airflow just right

They have some airless paint guns at Harbor freight that are very reasonable

You might take a look at the Ryobi paint sprayer. I don't have one but I have a number of Ryobi power tools. I like that its cordless and you don't need an air compressor. Plus the price is reasonable if you already have a battery and battery charger.
