You have to be a madman to play football period. Good hands, speed and elusiveness are PRIME skills to have as a punt returner.

If you can. Post a link when the NFL changed the punt return rules that gave the returner a space to catch the ball. I can’t find one. Mebbe I’m wording my search wrong. Most changes in the kicking game was to protect the other players on special teams from concussion and other injuries. Not just returners. Who have some control over that via fair catch and boundaries before impact. And. TY in advance.

Sanders was a rookie here. No one within 10 yards when he caught the ball.

BTW, was Jack Taytum on the GOAT list. He was pretty good. He didn’t do anything wrong on this play. Grogan threw a bad throw and Stingley laid out to catch it.

Nice videos. My google search came up short earlier too. I know it used to be only one yard. I'm not sure if they changed it in recent years. With speedsters running as fast as they can, a yard goes by in an instant. No time to catch it and protect yourself if they're able to time it right.

Yea, that was one of the dirtiest hits I've seen. I don't think AB was ever the same after that. He wasn't cleared to play the next week. I'll always remember Juju for getting revenge for that.

They always had a certain perimeter around the punt returner. And they don’t have a special crazy mentality. They just don’t. I know from experience. I’ve played with a lot of them. They’re more like center fielders. They track high balls, catch them. Then they run. They’re not paid a lot of money unless they’re elite at another position. Like Sanders, Woodsen, AB etc. I don’t think Simms or Gunner are madmen. Just little guys who can track and catch punts. Next!!!!

The perimeter was one yard, as you can see in the video. Most of those were legal hits. I played with some too. I also used to be friends with a guy who took a few to the house in the NFL. Pat Macafee says they do. He's one of the best punters in history. I'll go with his analysis.

Whatever, it’s not that important. Pat McAfee is one of the best punters in NFL history. Another WVU guy. I’ll never forgive him for the Pitt game. He has a nice blog tho.

As far as WVU goes, I prefer Bill McKenzie. He came up big when it counted.

You and I can remember wedges and wedge busters on KO’s. Thats what the NFL got rid of. The wedge would lock arms and take on wedge busters. It was a violent collision amongst big men. That was abolished. They also moved The KO up. Most kicks go into the end zone and most teams don’t want to return it because they get it at the 25. KOs are mostly useless now. i agree.. if given the choice of fielding a punt or being a receiver going over the middle....... the receiver is in way more danger of getting whacked
