Meanwhile whether you agree with his approach to the issue or not, Senator Rick Scott is one of the only ones in the Senate with the balls to challenge Congress to do something and tell the American people how they plan to stop Medicare and Social Security from going bankrupt.

I think the sunset clause is a good idea. It will force politicians to address an issue which they appear unwilling to do. Doing nothing rarely makes a problem go away, and usually makes it worse.

Proof of what? Someone is smart enough to actually address the issue? It forces a review and politicians to do something to avoid insolvency. Without it the can will be kicked down the road and people who paid into the system all their lives will be shit out of luck.

You know a sunset provision does not mean that a program automatically ends when the sunset time is reached. It means that the program ends when that time is reached only if the program is not renewed by Congress prior to the sunset. I see no real issue with this for Federal programs in general. How many “temporary” programs are still ongoing? Just an example, one of the many small fees that are charged by cell phone companies is the result of a “temporary” tax program passed in 1898 to fund the Spanish-American War.
Sunset provisions would meeely force Congress to get off its ass and actually do it’s job. Social Security and Medicare - yeah these are popular; we’d better figure out a way to get these renewed and solvent or the voters are going to toss us out of here. Funding for the Spanish-American War - yeah maybe we can let that one go. The point is not to end programs per se, but to force Congress to discuss and debate the merits of each program it’s funding, rather than just automatically renewing everything.

I'm aware of what a sunset provision is. You can apply it to a whole host of programs of low priority and I'm going to support it because in many cases it's going to be ok if Congress fails to act. I don't support it for these programs. And neither do most Americans.
They need stability in these programs and measured change, not periodic manufactured chaos. Nor an automatic 5 year rubber stamp. But if you can't see the debt limit shenanigans or groups of hyperpartisan ideologues driving to the brink of sunset beyond you're burying your head in the sand.
