I'd never keep it that long, but I get your point.

Really. How many keep a vehicle that long? Besides those still around, if really used, driven and worked that long don't look that great. Maybe they like antiques.
Been leasing for years. Usually get a new vehicle every 3 yrs. I like new vehicles, so any 8 yr battery warranty will not matter.
Batteries are evolving and only getting better. Good chance your next EV selected in ~3 yrs wil have totally different battery.
As far as oil & gasoline, let them greedy Texans and Arabs go drink their effing oil! Don't need it anymore.

Maintenance on a gas powered engine will be much more expensive than maintenance on an EV, so over 20 years you will end up spending considerably more.

I like new cars also. A three year old car is a junker to me. I get a new one every year or 10,000 miles.
With 60% of battery recharge energy coming from fossil fuels I am staying with with gas powered for now. Until it all becomes sustainable without government subsidy may be jumping the gun. If government subsidy goes away the EV could become a boat anchor. I prefer to see what happens with hydrogen & fuel cells as putting all your trust in the electrical grid may leave you powerless across the board.. home, car, phone laptop. May hit the hobby budget as collateral damage

Now we have this.

We used to get around by horse and buggy. Is there a point to be made, or are we reminiscing the good old days.

Exactly!
That's why automakers are moving to EVs which have ~30% less parts, hence less to breakdown and will cost less to make.

New one every year. You're luckier than most, especially that one who has that 20 yr old junker.
Got a long wait for hydrogen which is too expensive and fuel cells which are only good for putting us on the moon.
EVs show the most advances lately. Batteries just get better, along with solar which enhance the grid, in most States, except for Texas.
Government subsidy??? When will Oil become sustainable without government subsidy??? Over the years Big Oil has raked in more government subsidy than all the others you mention so far!

Big Oil give ya them fuzzy numbers, did they??? LOL
If you do 1 oil change a yr and only drive < 5K miles a yr maybe that engine will last 20 years....LOL
Most folks but a bit more miles on yearly which would render that engine junk
BTW it's nice NOT having anymore oil changes and not having to use a drop of gasoline...
