yeah well
the guy was an old g.p.
another kid, 5 years older than me, got clipped in a football game
the coach had him sit the bench, then the long bus ride back from a small country town to the school
then, when you're an orphan, the rest of the kids and coaches are long gone home, and you're left to sit on a curb waiting for someone to pick you up for a time, sometimes hours
you're hurt and its 2 am and no one is interested in driving you to any emergency room
so the next day you go in to the g.p. and yeah your knee is broken but no worries we'll cast it up
only thing is a day or so later and your foot is turning black, so back you go and yeah the cast might be on too tight so lets re-cast you
the real thing was the artery in the back of his knee was kinked or twisted and gangrene set in after the re-cast and they sawed off his right leg mid-thigh
I've had bunk mates moan all night laying in their bunk, one kid had a cracked femur, another a broken arm , 'cause no one wanted to wake up to take them in to an emergency room, so they wait till the next day
