Hey Malia,
There are two types of BBQ in KC: The fake kind where people dress up like going to a fancy place, and the old fashioned kind where you will find farmers in bib overalls enjoying really good meat.
The fancy place is Q39 on 39th street, East of KU Med center: really bad food, with high prices.
Brian's BBQ was an attempt to get sweet sauce on the meat, some like it but it is fake BBQ.
Brian's BBQ uses an old time approach with slow cooking. It is a grease joint with great food and big sandwiches for a reasonable price.
I like Rosedale BBQ on Southwest Blvd. It has great food, and it is real BBQ that is slow cooked for a tender meat. The first time I took an out of town group of 10 people there, I told them the order as we walked in and the food was on the table before we could get our winner coats off. The previous evening they had to wait 1.5 hours to get seated at a fancy place. Everything is good - including the cheap Chile.
In the old days, Rosedale's was next to a strip joint and the girls would come over to get some good food to eat - but the strip joint has been closed for decades.

Wow, you are back again. I first knew you in October of 2008 - that's twelve years ago. That would make you about 30 now. Can you tell me what happened toJade. I haven't seen anything of her is many years, 10 maybe. I guess she retired. Anyway the old phone numbers are probably expired: .....8173 & ....1573. Give me a PM,

Before or after dinner?
Apologies Malia, but Savannah is asking, and she's sitting across a table from me and I can see her eyes smiling

Gosh, I just asked if she had retired? These two used to be friends and worked together.
Anyway Carpenter
you are a special type of guy that likes Q39 BBQ. We all know that. I can live with that, I just want real BBQ when I either pick it up for a party, or dine in. The quality of the food is my only consideration.
I just had a lunch at a good Asian place for a total of 10 bucks with tip, a good tasty lunch. I overheard one of the owners talking with another customers about how another Asian place would charge $25 for a good menu item. The owner answered with: who would pay $25 for lunch. I have been to the other place, and the difference is just the atmosphere. OK if that is what you want, but at $10 for lunch the cheaper place, with better food, is always full - and the more expensive place always has much fewer customers.

I've had BBQ in a lot of places, but Fat Boys BBQ in Ocala Florida is the best I've had. IMHO . I'm gonna go with UC just to help the fight in KC. One of these days I'm gonna have to Spank Moon.

bbq
I miss Austin BBQ. Brisket is offered moist or lean. The outer crust has the perfect amount of smoke & salt & flavor. Really wish that existed here in KC. It's all too lean & dry here (flamesuit on). Jackstack crown prime is amazing (but not brisket).
