Most N95 mask have a bypass port. As such, outbound air is not filtered. The rest of N95 masks fit poorly AND if you sneeze or cough, which generates between 5-7 times the volume and force of exhalants, they will push away from your face and "gas-out" around the edges. You can cough or sneeze into your shirt, elbow or a tissue with greater results.

this is just a guess.
no mask = 80 - 100% infection.
mask = 40 - 80% infection.

updated list
Code:
.
mask type infection
no mask = 80 - 100%
home made mask = 40 - 80%
reusable N95 mask = 30 - 70%
standard n95 mask = 0 - 40%

don't discount the homemade ones. they're not totally useless. its better than nuthing.
better to have mild flu that you can survive thru than a severe flu that you might die from.

Try getting the facts straight.

Stewie, we've had a county judge Lina Hildago that's had a mask order for several months in Harris County. If you walk around indoors, at least 80% of the people been wearing masks since April.

Well, I notice you switched from 6 dead in 4 days to 6 dead "yesterday" (July 9). At least you are finally getting facts straight.
But here's an update - Harris County had 16 deaths yesterday (July 10). Up from 6.
Dallas had 9 deaths yesterday. Same as the day before.
Texas had 106 deaths yesterday. Up from 85.
|
So if the masks are so effective and been in place so long, why are we up to 491 deaths today?

The economy here in Houston is being destroyed. Many large companies now having big layoffs. Many small companies out of business. Large portions of strip malls empty. The company my wife works for will run out of work next week.
Some of these govt workers and teachers don't see it coming. If you don't have in person school, you don't need as many teachers, bus drivers, maintence staff, etc. Time to lay off these "nonessential" govt workers.

Had a good sneeze yesterday with one of those standard blue masks on. Had my hand covering mouth and it was still covered in spit.

There is a sterling example of "facts not in evidence".
80%? Pure bullshit. I have been in Dallas, Austin and Houston since April and I saw no more than about 50 percent compliance in most places until about a week ago.
Young people in bars wore NO masks to speak of as soon as the bars reopened. That si why the average of a Covid case has plunged into the low 30s or high 20s.
People in stores wore masks about 50 per cent of the time until recently. Now businesses won't let you in without a mask. That is the only reason things have improved. And it took a skyrocketing infection rate to do it.
People got sick of being stuck at home once summer go here and they went out and socialized without masks as soon as bars and restaurants reopened. That is why we are where we are.
Wear your mask and stay home unless you have no choice - like getting groceries and gas.
Since this epidemic began, your idiotic posts have dabbled in every irrelevant anecdote, inappropriate comparison, and moronic conspiracy theory in order to downplay or discredit the mess we are in.
I suspect you have a business that has been hammered and your income has been crushed. So you desperately grasp at straws in an attempt to persuade others that we need to reopen ASAP. You just don't care how many people die to save your own ass.

No, I would say he is well informed and that clutching at some random study that uses words like 'May" and 'Might" are testaments to your gullibility.

How many times are you and I going to cover the same ground here.
As to the oxygen deprivation/CO2 accumulation theories, you're probably right for, say, someone who's got asthma and who's working out. I wear a KN95 mask at the gym when doing intervals a couple of times a week, and I've noticed an increase in my stamina when I'm running outside without a mask. Maybe it's like training at altitude.
As to coronavirus and masks, I've read several papers and scanned more. I challenge you to find a single one that shows masks don't work FOR CORONAVIRUSES. (I agree with what you've written about influenza.) The only thing negative I've run across was a Korean study, early on, where people coughed through a mask into a petri dish seven inches away. And it wasn't really negative, because the two women in the study using the cloth masks didn't project the virus onto the petri dish.
If you've got a decent memory, you'll remember I agree with you about masks with valves or ports. And I told you if I cough or sneeze, I do cover my face regardless of whether I'm wearing a mask. My medical N95 masks, which I bought 15 years ago after SARS, do not have valves. The KN95 masks which I bought more recently don't either. Finally I bought industrial N95 masks without ports/valves from Acumed recently at a very reasonable price. The model# is ZYB-11. They don't seal as well as the medical N95's, but are probably among the better options you can get right now.

What I don't understand is that gnadfly seems to oppose masks, which if most people used them would enable businesses to stay open. A lot of people in Texas agree with him, which is part of why the load on hospitals may continue to increase and Abbott may be forced to shut down businesses again.

False, they get Medicare rate no matter what. There is no extra money for Covid. But as usual, facts dont matter.

Gee if it weren't for the mask mandate it would have been twelve. You see those masks really do work. Of course I am just imitating what a dumb ass liberal would say.

Well, Texas is breaking 15,000 cases per day now.
God fuck us all, everyone!
