Oh really? Explain to us how you could have "shorted the market", Luke. What would you have traded in? S&P 500 futures? Do you even know what they are? And why would shorting the market expose you to insider trading charges? Insider trading is defined as buying or selling based on material non-public information. It almost always involves company-specific info. The overall market is moved by macro data. Unless you have advance knowledge of, say, an unexpected Federal Reserve announcement or a surprisingly weak/strong monthly unemployment report, it's almost impossible to be accused of insider trading on the broader market movements. Yesterday's steep selloff was driven entirely by information that was public and widely disseminated, i.e. the spread of the coronavirus and Saudi plans to flood the oil markets.
