A scenario where the "Shit Hits The Fan" most likely will involve a nuclear event. In such a scenario the environment would be contaminated with nuclear fall out. Most people would die from this initially. Survivors would be faced with long term affects of Nuclear Radiation where new diseases would be a challenge and no treatment would be available. I am not sure I would even want to survive such a catastrophic event.

Terrorist attacks, maybe knocking out the power grid
Economic collapse

Pandemic
Large scale natural disaster or weather disaster
Civil war(the blacks and the Hispanics want to secede)


Due to overpopulation, food will have to be rationed in the very near future. Our seas are overfished. There is less and less farmland to make room for more people, more factories, more stores, more businesses. We may have to resort to eating all lab grown food, as real food will be astronomically expensive, only the rich will be able to afford.

A SHTF scenario is an interesting subject there is a host of information out there on this subject. In my opinion if we're lucky and there is no nuclear involvement the chances of long term survival is greatly enhanced. There are two things however that would be inevitable for survival and most people aren't wired to perform these two tasks and that is stealing and killing other people. Even under desperate circumstances it maybe easier said than done.
