Default Poke Restaurants?

So before the holidays, started hearing about Poke restaurants which are some sort of Hawaiian type of cuisine (had to look it up!).

A Poke bowl? Really love those Korean Bobo bowls but wonder if these are similar?

Anyone been to a Poke place (shouldn't there be a joke in here somewhere?) in Dallas?

There certainly are several around.

A Poké bowl is raw fish usually fresh tuna or fresh octopus (YUMMY!!) and mixed with lemon juice, lime juice, sesame oil, seasoning, spices, fresh chopped garlic and onions and ginger.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poke_(Hawaiian_dish)

Sort of like a Hawaiian version of Peruvian Ceviche.

Best places to go for Poké:

Poké-O at Mockingbird Station, Dallas, TX.

4.8 rating on Google and 5.0 on YELP
(Be aware this place only been opened 5 months so the ratings may not have averaged out yet)

Malibu Poké at 3888 Oak Lawn Ave #102, Dallas, TX.
4.3 rating on Google and 4.0 on YELP

Poké Bop at 4103 Lemmon Ave. Dallas, TX and at 140 Abrams Rd. Dallas, TX.

Pōk The Raw Bar at 3699 McKinney Ave #306, Dallas, TX.

Now a Poké bowl should be simple: quality fresh seafood, rice, some garnishes, like this:

Unfortunately many Poké restaurants are trying to do too much:

in their never ending quest to find as many ways as they can to be different from the other Poké restaurants so attract more customers, they are going for quantity over quality and throwing everything they can think of in a Poké bowl.

If you get something like this, sure, it's nice to get a lot of food for your money but those are not authentic Hawaiian Poké bowls.

They are Poké bowls that have fallen victim to that same fate many authentic ethnic dishes before them have met:

AMERICANIZED!

Now when you get tired of eating Poké bowls and want to get Pokéd, many of us Gentlemen here will gladly be your Poké dessert with extra cream.

Why does it sound nasty? Is it the raw fish part of it? Guess a lot of folks don't really care for that type of dish.

Has anyone reading this topic tried any of this type of food?

I love sushi and so if there is raw fish, that's fine although raw octopus is rather chewy.

Thanks for all of the responses thus far!!!

Sincerely,
Elisabeth

If you have eaten sushi and Ceviche, it's not nasty.

They use the same quality fresh fish in Poké bowls that are used for sushi and Ceviche.

Rather surprised no one here has eaten in one of these establishments. I'll try one here in another week or three and will report back!!!

I love sushi (slice of raw fish on rice or in rice roll) and sashimi (the slices of raw fish without any rice) and when I crave it, I want a lot of it.

A Poké bowl doesn't fill me up and I will be hungry 10 minutes later.

While not a Poke restaurant, Sushi Zushi does have a really good Mango Poke bowl.

I’ve tried it and don’t find it as interesting as sushi or shashimi. I think the volume of other ingredients take the focus off the fish. If the sushi or shashimi experience is getting a bit too routine, I’d look for a well made crudo or seafood tartare instead of poke.

I used to live in Hawaii, I love Japanese food but some of it not so much.

Extremely fresh, just caught tuna that is called "Ahi sashimi" is heaven on earth if the sushi chef is good. Paired with a good Japanese beer and some veggie tempura and you will be a convert. Ahi tuna sashimi is the mildest and the most delicious thanks to the fat content.

Try a "Bento". Bento is a lunch bowl, usually something tame like teriyaki chicken and rice. I am with TexTushHog, I would prefer everything served on it's own instead of together.

I do not like sushi, but I could eat an entire Ahi tuna if I had the money. There is something in the sauces and dips that they serve with it that just tastes amazing. I think it is called imuni or something like that. It is a subtle blending of soys and spices that is as delicate as a geisha's face.
