The NFA Act of 1934 only imposed a $200 tax and registration list on the sale of machine guns and short barrel shotguns. It did Not ban the weapons. The Tax stamp is required today for legal transfer of such weapons, as amended by the NFA Act of 1986. This act prohibited the civilian transfer of machine guns manufactured after 1986. Military and law enforcement are exempted.
