At least with respect to Texas I am acquainted with the embryonic stages of the law as it was being debated in the Texas Legislature and it's subsequent implementation, which included the commercialization of "classes" around the State and the clamour of those who sought a "status" as a "firearms instructor" for CHL classes with the frustration of LE who was tasked with the responsibility of separating the wheat from the chaff.
Texas has "always" had a "saddle bag" law since the "Old West Days" and initially I thought the morphing would be to legitimize the "carrying" of handguns by those qualified and trained to do so. For those of us who grew up with firearms in the house and around the farm or ranch there wasn't a lot to learn about the care and use of a firearm, short or long barreled. But for those who yearned for the gunslinging days portrayed in the spaghetti Westerns who were "gunless" in their formative years, it has been a challenge.

Gone with the wind...our country is so fucked up compared to what it used to be that it is just a crime against humanity.
Trump is restoring some of it but it is so fucked up there is only so much one can do...

With respect to the 2nd amendment. Please find me a SCOTUS opinion that says that a person can CARRY a firearm (handgun) without restrictions of any kind, including minimal training requirements.
On the one side of the discussion are a bunch of clowns who want to restrict ownership/possession on the basis of PERCEIVED mental instability based on the "red flag" report of jealous, rejected lovers and/or spouses or offended neighbors who want to fuck with people because their grass is too high~! On the other end are nut-cases who believe anyone and everyone should be able to strap on a bazooka to go to the mall on Sunday afternoon.
Some where in the middle are those who believe that law-abiding citizens with feel comfortable wearing a handgun should be able to do so in MOST PLACES with sufficient training and education in "the law" to make appropriate decisions regarding "shoot-don't shoot" situations and who are capable of exercising good judgment when the a crowded, busy mall full of innocents and their offspring, who just want to enjoy the day shopping and playing at the designated "play center."
There is INSUFFICIENT training in the standard carry curriculum and a lack of adequate education in "the law" to meet that standard of ....

In Texas, which BTW has some of the highest LE training standards in the country and whose standards were often used by many states attempting to upgrade their training, according to my last inventory the basic peace officer curriculum for licensing had about 120 total hours of the topics that are covered by the concealed carry course in about 10 ... and the Texas DPS has roughly 500-600 hours in their training academy for new hires! (That's after passing a background check and a psych exam!)
When you can "unass" a pistol, place two rounds into center mass with a 90% rate at seven meters, and reholster under three seconds, then we can talk "tools"! That should be the standard if one is to carry a pistol into the mall, along with adequate instruction on the loads to carry.

Glad you are back LL - you are a great benefit to this board.

Not really. The organization of suburban communities, whether formal towns or just neighborhoods still lend themselves to the same environment and attitude, but what has changed is so many people's lives are consumed with a screen and a keyboard ....
cough, cough!
... and personal interaction is getting almost nonexistent.
(It's "interesting" to watch two people on a date with their cells out electronically communicating with OTHERS, which I assume by giving them the benefit of the doubt they aren't texting to each other at the table! I wonder if he gets any pussy or just a picture of it, if he or she is even interested!)

I think 5 hours is nowhere near adquate to impart the law and thoughtfulness for safe carry.
That curriculum needs an overhaul.

In Mo, and Ks you need no training anymore to carry.

Is that the only way they could get anyone qualified to carry?

Don't get me going on Texan jokes LL.
Bamscram is not quite correct.
Although Missouri is an open carry state, local munis can restrict that. However a cc permit allows carry in those munis.

I'll second that.
I don't think everyone should carry. I think about 1/4 of the people with driver's licenses should have them revoked. They are paying more attention to their phone than the road.

Speaking of driving and firearms.
NonSuicide Firearm deaths in U.S. in 2018: about 15,000
( https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/past-tolls)
Vehicle collision deaths in U.S. in 2018: about 40,000
( https://www.insurancejournal.com/new.../24/499107.htm)
I guess we should be glad that driver's education lasts more than 10 hours and ...
.....that driver's license issuance requirements are not less stringent!
Will the Liberals pass anti-vehicle legislation this year?
